Pete McCloskey has died. If you don’t remember his effort to wrest the 1972 Republican presidental nomination from Richard Nixon on an anti-war platform, you're missing out. I first learned of him from “Doonesbury,” where Garry Trudeau featured Zonker visiting his mother at the RNC event. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/08/us/politics/pete-mccloskey-dead.html?unlocked_article_code=1.qU0.hjLc.C4gLpbRzQXfS&smid=url-share https://www.gocomics.com/doonesbury/1972/08/25

In a remarkable move, Trump-appointed judge Aileen Cannon vacated (cancelled) the May 20th trial date in Donald Trump's stolen classified documents/obstruction of justice/Espionage case in Florida, and she announced that she will be setting no trial date. This is particularly outrageous given that Trump's own lawyers had previously suggested an August trial date.

Cannon's conduct is reminiscent of some of the evidence in Trump's New York case: David Pecker, head of Enquirer tabloid magazine, was involved in a crooked scheme with Trump to catch and kill damaging stories to help the criminal in the 2016 election. Now, it sure looks like Judge Cannon is Catching and Killing Trump's Espionage case, which undoubtedly will help Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

Regarding Judge Cannon's pro-Trump bias, the recusal cup runneth over. Hopefully, Special Counsel Jack Smith agrees, and finally files a motion to REMOVE Judge Aileen "Pecker" Cannon from presiding over Trump's Florida prosecution.

It is evident from today's Supreme Court argument that several Justices have entirely abandoned any interest in the rule of law even in the face of the Trump-led insurrection.

The Court had an opportunity to restore its credibility by demonstrating, as it did fifty years ago in US v Nixon, that it stood unanimously behind the rule of law regardless of party loyalty. Instead, it seems poised to demonstrate the opposite: that it is dominated by political hacks.

April 5th and I already had to harvest 6” of oregano last night. Gave it to a foodie neighbour. I expect to do 5-6 harvests by November.

I still have a jar of dried oregano I’m using from last year.

It was 5 harvests last year, but it is the healthiest it has been since I planted it in 2021. I think my new habit of misting it each evening is going well. Water in the morning, a light mist at night.

Not bad for a plant I paid $4 for in 2021.

Buying established herbs usually goes well.

From above, my grow bag of oregano shows a dense new growth coming in, and a quarter of it is still big and floofy

Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!

When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?

bici,
@bici@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr
I think that that studies of babies and sound would support that sounds and emotions are innate;

Some dude on Bluesky is telling me that the movie Rocky, in 1976, was:

“…a purely formulaic underdog story for the masses portrayed by the simplest of antagonists - boxers. Lower and middle classes could relate to the theme, were inspired and moved by it.“

Buddy, it wasn’t formulaic •50 years ago•.

It took the underdog story to a place it had never really gone to. It CREATED the genre.

It’s like calling 48 Hrs just another buddy cop movie WHEN IT WAS THE FIRST ONE to be a success.

Breakfast stack — a biscuit, Calabrian chili crunch mayo, tomato, avocado, bacon, and eggs.

Dairy- and gluten-free, but I’m not missing it in this. Pretty dang tasty.

The biscuits are actually made with a GF mix by a PEI company called Duinkerken, and I really like them!

I’m not usually a box-mix person, but with gluten-free, it’s a whole other ball game and I have a lot to learn. So, for now, whatever keeps me successful is a win.

Alright, have any of you discovered a "family secret"?

When my Great Grandfather died, we were cleaning out his house, and found nude pics of my Great Grandmother, and about 10 thousand dollars in cash hidden in different places all around the house, we also found a ton of hidden liquor bottles, but his alcoholism was a pretty common knowledge. He had quit when my Great Grandmother had gotten sick, because he wanted to be able to care for her.

Awhile ago we all found out that my Aunt was not actually my Grandfather's child. My Grandmother had gotten pregnant at 17, when she was raped, but my Grandfather agreed to marry her anyway, and they just never told my Aunt, and he raised her as his daughter. My Aunt had been the one to care for my Grandfather in his final days, and my absolute bitch of a Step Grandmother was the one who told her. My Aunt had been trying to get her clean off of morphine and alcohol, after she kept finding her passed out naked in the house. My Step Grandmother screamed at her, I don't know why you're doing all this, you weren't even his! I don't know if my Grandmother ever intended to tell my Aunt, as she was in her 60's when this happened, but she told her the whole truth when my Aunt confronted her.

Happy !

I'm still not onto Black history. I'm still on white US history.

Q: Why were Black folk so happy when OJ was acquitted? To be honest, it feels disgusting. Why does it seem like you're happy he got away with murder?

A: Racism. Black folk did not like OJ that much. In fact, many Black people think he did it. Black folk didn't "celebrate OJ." Black folk celebrated the hope that a brutally unjust, evil, and racist system, could be defeated at all.
