Okay, y'all. Let's do this one more time.

I have a large bowl of perfectly good, yummy M&M's.

I also have a small handful of M&M's laced with tetrodotoxin, which kills in 6 hours and has no antidote.

I mix the small amount of poisoned candy into the large, safe bowl of candy.

I hand you the bowl.

@hamato @stefanfendt @Greenseer @RickiTarr I get you on the problem with the metaphor. And I agree that it should not be used as an illustration of "see, this is why I have nothing to do with men at all!" If I thought that, I wouldn't be coming up on year 26 of a pretty awesome marriage. 😊

But. I use the metaphor because so many men do NOT understand why so many women avoid dealing with men as much as possible, and why most of the rest of us do keep our full trust in reserve.

Because we simply cannot know. Because each one of us has had experiences in which we have thought a man to be trustworthy for a very long time, and he was trustworthy--until that very moment we were alone with him and suddenly he wasn't.

The M&Ms are stark, shocking, and problematic--but I use that example because there are still too many men out there who refuse to grasp the stark nature of the problem.

a neurotypical will usually view as an excuse,

Beware of politicians who blame vulnerable groups for your problems - they’re the ones not talking about making your life better but about making someone else’s life worse.

Their target may be refugees or a religious group or an ethnic group or trans folks. But whoever the vulnerable minority is, the message is basically the same: you’re supposed to believe that denying these people their rights will somehow help you and your family. It won’t, of course. Don’t buy it.

@andrewstroehlein Scapegoating is a practice (nearly?) as old as humanity itself. It's our inherent inability to acknowledge and deal with what's lacking in ourselves. We will never mature as a species until we face up to who and what we really are. We can only hope that we mature before we wipe ourselves out of existence.

Because there is no such thing as whole.

Everything in the universe -- every star, planet, meteor, fragment of space debris, land mass, ocean, animal, building, vehicle, human, flesh, cell, atom -- all of it is divided. All of it is lacking. Lack is at the core of the universe's nature; no one and nothing exists without it.

Our task is to be solid on these realities -- and to hold each other, comfort each other in the dark, and help each other learn to accept that we are accepted.
