Got a new idea for a novel. Pre-industrial society on nameless planet. Disabled people sometimes disappear and come back “fixed”. It’s the aliens. The kicker is they’re purifying the gene pool and replacing the people in synth bodies. I know this might trigger some disabled people, but what I wouldn’t give to be in a non disabled body with the same mind…

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@Fury No publisher would touch such a book. I was asked to tone down on character's quest to heal his body. He eventually doesn't succeed, but they said the quest in itself was problematic, which didn't make sense since all my life I have longed for a solution to a disability that made my childhood a nightmare.....

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@Fury Anyway. Sidenote. In the 90s, HIV/AIDS in Africa got so much attention that it became a lucrative industry. Victims got free food + grants to start businesses + free education for their children among many other benefits from NGOs. Thus to a poor person, getting AIDS was a way out of poverty, and I heard stories of people deliberately infecting themselves to get all this free stuff.

Author copies arrived of this bulky anthology of African ghost stories. Now I can say that my story was published in the same book as the legend, Amos Tutuola!

There's a review of my new collection of stories, Where Rivers Go to Die.
"Dila leverages his experience working in film to craft his prose, in his approach to plot, characterisation, structure, and tension in his stories. The intense, cross-genre assortment of stories collected here blends African spirituality with horror, the fantastical, and technology"

16. How comfortable are you with writing kissing and/or intimacy scenes?

Oh-oh. I once wrote a romance novella for a publisher launching an imprint like Mills and Boon. The biggest comment I got from the editor was "Dilman, this is a romance. You have to give your readers a hot-hot-hot scene! Saying 'they kissed' and 'they made love' is a big cheat and a big no-no!"

Uhm.... well, in films I do sex scenes without batting an eyelid. But in prose...... I don't know why I avoid it.

This idle evening I check goodreads for new reviews of my works, and like always I'm pleasantly surprised to find someone left something on a book I'd given up on.... but this one has me baffled, for this person doesn't like the book because "I didn't have much pre-existing knowledge of or emotional attachment to the mythology and story-telling of" the area Dilman based his book on, and I keep wondering why people expect African books to be anthropological texts! 1/2

@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

Looks like people in Nigeria, Kenya and perhaps Uganda are moving en mass to Truth Social. They were so addicted to twitter that now with the limits many feel like their life is at an end. I talked to a young lady today and she sounds very depressed, not sure what to do next. But Truth Social.... yo, not sure how that happened, but its trending in these countries and a flock effect is happening. Sadly.

It's a quiet Sunday morning here. I spent all of yesterday writing a 5K word treatment for a feature film, and today I have to write a 6K non-fiction essay for an academic publication. I can't say I'm having a fun weekend :-((

It's Friday so we do a thing? I'm a transmedia artist from Uganda, mostly work in and in the realms and would love to follow people in the same fields, generally, but anyone involved in the business, or those who and have a good sense of humor. I'll such folk.

Its hard to read a post with so many hashtags, but well, looking to increase my and so give me a boost or tag people you think I should connect with.

I'm a bit stuck now. A big corporation has not paid me work I finished in October last year. Its in the contract that they can take this long to pay as they conduct audit. But I'm broke. 😭 Banks in my country can't give me loans because I have no running contract.

Does anyone know where I can urgently borrow money online? $2K Payable within 6 months.

Can anyone lend me this money?

dilmandila, to linux
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

Trying to move away from Windows to Linux Mint but my biggest annoyance so far is installing software. Like the most effective way is you have to be online to install software and that consumes data. I have 3 to 4 machines I use regularly, so if I am to migrate all to Linux, I'll have to download software 3 or 4 times, not once as in windows. A pain and costly.

So Publishers Weekly gives a kind review of my new collection of short stories, Where Rivers Go To Die, saying it is a "meticulously concocted volume full of starkly vivid imagery and gripping prose. These tales are guaranteed both to tickle the imagination and give readers the heebie-jeebies."

"How to Start a Zombie Apocalypse" is a short film I did in 2017 (or was it 2018?), about a woman who defies death and accidentally unleashes #zombies upon the world. I wrote it like a folk tale, and it's one of those I had a bit of fun working on. You can watch it here on PeerTube

What Happened in Room 13. About an extramarital affair that goes horribly wrong. The woman ends up dead and the man races against time to hide the body.

My first #shortfilm is here. Love it so much. I think its still my best work since I was very naive when making it and eight million views on YouTube suggest its a good one to watch. Here it is without ads
