The Last Pantheon dedicated to the memory of Nick Wood (1961 - 2023) is a story of African superheroes by African authors who share a deep love of the book. Co-writer Tade Thompson provided the cover art and nine illustrations. But this is not a comic book. It's a novella, and it includes interviews, articles, and even some of the initial email exchanges between the two authors when first discussing the project.

How does anyone over the age of 35 still feel interested enough to keep up with new music .. or new anything?

I used to keep up with new releases of various forms on a near-weekly basis. Now younger friends will ask me if I've checked out [new album/series/book/restaurant/etc] and I'm like, no, I'm old. I'll check it out in 5 years if anyone is still talking about it.

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@athena I try to, by asking people under 30 to recommend what to listen to, and then I they suggest to me Celine Dione and Shaba Ranks and I don't kbow if they think I can't enjoy new music or if to them the old songs are way better than what they have.

"Among the judges, only one was notified that Shen had used AI in his work, according to the report. But another judge, who had been exploring AI content creation, recognised that Shen’s work was AI-generated. The judge said he did not vote for the submission because it was not up to standard and “lacked emotion”."

I'm overwhelmed by all the engagement that my post about being nominated for Philip K Dick Awards generated. I haven't stopped smiling since yesterday, seeing all these strangers, over 1000 strangers, being happy for me and congratulating me. (1k? I thought such numbers are a rarity in Mastodon) I still don't know why people are being nice to me but it makes me happy 🤗❤

@thepoliticalcat Ah... which one did you watch? 😊 I hope Kifaro. Its one I enjoyed making very much.

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat I love Kurosawa and Ray, haven't yet met the others, but will be looking for their works. Any titles I should look for?

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat ha, Room 13. My first love. Somehow I don't think I've ever made a film as good as that one!

dilmandila,
@dilmandila@mograph.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat I have Red Sorghum on my drive, been there for about 10 years now, but somehow I never got a chance to take a look at it. I felt it was an important film so I needed to make proper time, as in prepare for it like it's a big occasion.

When I was 20 I thought by the time I hit mid-40s, I'd be a world famous writer and filmmaker, but well, here I am, only mildly successful but getting a lot of praise for each story from the very few who find them. Uhm.... So, I turn to teaching, and mentoring. This is one of the classes I give, and it's online so you can sign up, if you ever want to get into #screenwriting

I'm at my wits end 😭 I need help. What's causing this flickering in my render in Cycles? At first I thought it was my textures in low lights, but I replaced all with a plain Principled BSDF and rendered with an HDRI without other meshes, and I still get it. I don't want to use EEVEE as this VFX for a live action short film and I need Cycles for realism.

Anybody has any ideas?

Blender Cycles 4.0.1 (tried with 3.9 and earlier versions as well), 1080ti GPU, i7

High contrast image, lots of shadows. 3D render of a robot, colorful with red yellow and blue textures. The textures are flickering. Background is plain gray.

It was a tough race to finish person before the year ends, but my computer had other plans and it was just so effing slow in rendering that I had to give up. I should make it a new year resolution to buy myself a new GPU.
Still, I shared some screenshots of the works in progress and a wallpaper gift of the character. Download and enjoy ;-)

What's the best free/open source way to get email subscribers to your I'm looking through options like OptinMonster and WP Mail SMTP and I'm really wary of having to subscribe to another paid service. The money isn't there. I have the Newsletter plugin installed, but I wonder if there is another way that's more efficient?

I got a "refrigerator question" after TV series (You enjou a film but later get a "wait-what?" moment) It makes no sense for absolute tyranny to exist in a community of less than 10k people, struggling to survive in a hole. Why lie to people for hundreds of years yet the truth increases chances or survival?

Is tyranny just an overused trope in dystopias for story conflict, or is this how the system makes us tolerate the bad governments of today?

I just binged on Silo, the Apple TV series, and it's so hooking. Kind of a fresh take on dystopia. Now I want to read the books, they are by Hugh Howey, and I wonder if they are worth a read? Anyone got an insight?

One of the phrases that’s been popular in China this year according to this article: https://www.sixthtone.com/news/1014370

For more context, people in China have been assembling plain white bread sandwiches to try to understand how we live in this part of the world, and they are posting through it (the idea of eating anything cold or raw, especially a vegetable, is seen as especially disgusting in the Chinese world, with some exceptions)

@skinnylatte We also have versions of "white people's food" in Uganda and most of Africa. In Uganda we even call a potato "Irish potatoes" if speaking in English, and "European/white people potatoe" if speaking in a local language, but "Irish" is now universally used for this type of potato. The indeginous potato is called "sweet potato" in English.
