At the Godot Conf, at our last dinner the population breakdown was:

  • 3 iPhone users
  • 7 vanilla Android users
  • 7 fully liberated Android, no Google users.

It is a crowd that vibes at a different frequency.

Background: I tried to privacy shame the Android folks at the table.

drfyzziks,
@drfyzziks@makervine.net avatar

@LouisIngenthron @Migueldeicaza What you likely heard somebody’s misinterpretation of the “Significant Locations” feature in iOS which can keep track of places that you visit frequently (which the phone assumes must be “significant” to you). It does this to provide useful context to locations in Photos, Maps, etc. If you are signed into your Apple ID it will encrypt this info end-to-end & share across your Apple devices.

However, it can easily be turned off.

drfyzziks,
@drfyzziks@makervine.net avatar

@LouisIngenthron 15 years old, but interesting! Looking over the iOS location privacy settings today, there’s a pretty decent amount of fine-control over the settings they mention in that 2nd screenshot:

My latest pet peeve: receiving very obviously AI-generated email messages from work colleagues & clients. If you’re going to send me an email, please take a few minutes to write it yourself.

But, if you insist on using AI to generate your emails, at least delete the “I hope/trust this email finds you well” opening line. It’s a hallmark of chatGPT-generated email.

drfyzziks,
@drfyzziks@makervine.net avatar

@luciedigitalni There's more to it than just the opening sentence. The content of the messages are overly, inappropriately formal and don't match their writing styles from years past. And some of them have outright said that they just ask chatGPT or CoPilot to write all their email now.

And then there's the frequency… In the past hour I've received three extremely similarly-worded messages with variations of the same opening, from 3 entirely different people/organizations.

Yes, will demote WebApps to bookmarks on iOS 17.4 in the EU. Yes, they claim the EU is to blame. And no, that is not true IMHO. What is right is that under the DMA (Digital Market Access) rules WebApps could become a real escape route for Apps to avoid the Apple App Store tax. So better to close that possible loophole and blame the evil EU. IMHO. Reminds me a lot of the Cookie Banner stuff. Same story. Same blame game.

drfyzziks,
@drfyzziks@makervine.net avatar

@Gargron @takeitev @jwildeboer the web apps are served from somewhere. Depending on what a web app does, having a whole backend of always-running servers in one or more datacentres could be considered unnecessary.

I am so fascinated by what The Browser Company is doing with Arc, and today's announcement of their 'Arc II' next phase is all about the idea of "a browser that browses for you".

We have all the details on what this means, from Instant Links that skip Google search to Live Folders and more: https://www.macstories.net/news/the-browser-company-announces-act-ii-for-arc-the-browser-that-browses-for-you/

@viticci LLMs are nifty little toys that consume inordinate amounts of energy in order to return less-than-reliable information. Not sure I want to be trusting my search results to one.

@mike @Gargron Can confirm. Playback issues on both Safari 17.2 and Firefox 120.01 on macOS 14.2. The initial thumbnail loads, but when I click play I just get a spinning loading indicator. Seems to be specific to the Flipboard Peertube instance - I don’t run into this issue when playing video back on other instances, like @lonseidman’s https://peertube.lon.tv.

If you want secure messaging between and phones, don’t use . Seriously, don’t do it. There are other, better and more reliable options out there (cough Signal cough).

I've used Beeper (w/a test Apple account) & liked it. However after the recent kerfuffle around Beeper Mini, I deleted the app b/c I didn't like how Beeper handled things (adding devices to my iCloud account & unregistering a phone number, both w/o my permission)

Glad it was a test account / number.

    Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

    @peterbutler I have similar issues from time to time. Usually swiping up and quitting/restarting the settings up resolves it. When it doesn’t, I often have to resort to a blood sacrifice of some sort. sigh technology…

    I popped into my local Apple Store today. Turns out Apple no longer sells leather anything in their stores. No more leather cases for iPhone 14 and earlier, no more leather watch straps.

    They still sell the remaining stock of MagSafe Battery Packs and Duo Folding Chargers, but they yanked the leather stuff from the shelves.

    This is one of those “DUH!” moments when the government of realizes that yes, indeed, imposing a TOLL on all news links means that there is no financial incentive for companies to allow those links! 🤦‍♂️

    Meta and Google were both very clear that it would not make financial sense for them to continue offering news. The Canadian government thought they were bluffing.

    Oops!

    https://www.reuters.com/technology/meta-starts-process-end-news-availability-canada-2023-08-01/

    drfyzziks,
    @drfyzziks@makervine.net avatar

    @danyork And I don’t really care. Can’t remember the last time I used either one for news.

    drfyzziks,
    @drfyzziks@makervine.net avatar

    @abff08f4813c @danyork just tested it out and according to Google News, people in my area are most interested in news from 4 provinces away, and 3 small town newspapers in Northern Ontario...

    drfyzziks,
    @drfyzziks@makervine.net avatar

    @abff08f4813c @danyork this might be one of those weird Canada vs America differences. I imagine Google & Meta are insanely popular as news "sources" in the US. But (anecdotally) most Canadians I know go directly to the source for their news ... eg: the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, CBC, etc. Sure, Google News is used here, but I just don't think it's nearly as prevalent. Possibly because it tends to suggest stories that aren't necessarily relevant to Canadians.
