The reading was OK, said Vigh, who lives in 100 Mile House in central , but she didn't know that the reading wasn't local. The closest air quality monitoring station was in Williams Lake, nearly 100 km away.

The most useful invention I've ever run across... Corsi-Rosenthal box.

I have used this so far for:

  1. Wildfire smoke
  2. COVID-19
  3. Bacon smoke (on Saturdays, LOL)
  4. General improvement of AQI
  5. Pet related allergies (hay and dander)
  6. Ragweed/pollen heavy days
  7. Dust from Santa Ana winds
  8. Dust from construction/remodeling
  9. Paint fumes (only partially useful, doesn't absorb gases, but helps somewhat) -- plus it sucks all the dust from the air, so it doesn't stick to your paint

(probably other uses, too...)

For my new pals on Mastodon, as part of my semi-regular reminder that my main deal is I'm a singer/songwriter, here's a helpful music video explaining, in rhyme and melody, How to Build A Corsi-Rosenthal Box. These are the simple, inexpensive air purifiers that you can easily build at home and pull Covid, dust, pollen, smoke, and other crap out of your indoor air. Saw some homes listed for sale that include medical quality air filters with UV light purification as part of their HRV systems and is it madness to be seriously tempted to make a home ownership decision swayed by this feature? I like my condo but it was purchased pre-WFH and pre-pandemic everything. And given the likely importance of air quality now and likely in the future ... 🤔🤔☣️🔥 🏘️ 😩

@mildbeard@fosstodon.org avatar

@Pentapod In my family we have filters and lights which are portable. We can move them around the house or bring them to family parties.

If I were home buying and a house had HVAC with UV light sterilization as you say, I'd consider that an attractive feature. I'd subtract the replacement cost of the system from the asking price in making a decision. I would make sure to buy the right home first and foremost. You can always add mitigations to the best house for you.

If you've been thinking of getting a PC fan kit, they are on sale! (We own two of the XL Luggables and adore them--they are soooo quiet you have to put your hand in front of the fan to be sure they're on!)

I built my first today with supplies I picked up at Canadian Tire. You can get the same stuff cheaper at Home Despot.

I bought:

1x Lasko 20" box fan - $49.99
4x 3M MPR1900 MERV 13 ultra allergen & virus 20"x20"x2" - $33.00
(The cheaper ones were on sale for $17.99. Get them. They're just as good but we're out.)

I had:

1x roll of white gorilla duct tape. Use any kind, just make sure it will make a good airtight seal.

Recycle the fan's box into the bottom of the , cut off the flaps to cover the gaps at the corners and you're done.

I'm seriously impressed with this thing. Even on the low setting it pulls a LOT of air. On high, it would do well to filter an office.

Redeployed new Corsi Rosenthal boxes on low speed. Things are dry, but no harm in sucking up any remaining dust from demolition, any mold and mildew spores that might be lurking. These things are great! For wildfire smoke, COVID and influenza, mold spores... cat litter smells! MERV13 is specified, equal to FPR10+. #air #quality #aqi

's government is failing our school kids YET AGAIN by foot dragging on air quality, and banning the use of ffs!

"Corsi, dean of engineering at U of California who co-created the box, recently took to social media to publicly challenge the province's position and offered to speak with government officials about the issue.

"The department won't be taking him up on the offer. There is no need to add any additional filtration."

HEPA filters catch 99.95% of particles. |es use MERV13 filters which catch more than 90%. Ikea devices use EPA12 filters which catch 99.5% of particles.
If the DIY aspect of a CR-box or a PC-fan-filter box is off-putting to you; if you want a nice looking air purifier; if you want something with affordable replacement filters: IKEA has got your back. A Uppåtvind device costs €35, a replacement filter €5.
(I know IKEA are problematic in other ways.)

So is anyone aware of premade CR boxes, or kits, available to purchase?

I need to come up with a couple in the next two of weeks. I already have one box fan, and a hardware that doubtless can provide the materials. I know there are quantities of plans out there on the web.

But if I could somehow just cause a couple of these to show up at my house, it would make things soooo much easier..

We put this (and its twin) together last Sunday, and this has been a pretty good week, air-quality-wise (as these things go these days). Not even a week later, the filter is already visibly darker.

LOL at the irony of Dominic Cardy starting an evidence-based party. As NB’s education minister, he blocked me for offering to organize parent volunteers to build CR boxes for schools for free. He actually claimed that CR boxes spread virus around, and that NB classrooms were found to be fine. You’d have to be willfully ignorant to not notice the huge spike in Covid cases that occurs about a week after NB schools resume classes, unmasked. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/new-federal-centrist-party-canada-1.6972891

Americans have contracted over 50 million infections in the last 3 months- of SUMMER, mind you - according to a seasoned monitor of wastewater data.

That works out to somewhere between 5 million and 20 million people who will be identified as having .

And even more who have unrealized or invisible symptoms that may result in brain damage, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc.

"plan to take multi-layered precautions like using masks, getting boosters, and using remote options through January" "

My advice? Media sources & doctors who spin this as "numbers are going down! yay!" do not have your family's interests at heart & should be cut out of your diet. I can bet they weren't focusing on rising numbers when that was happening.

He estimates 40,000 [ cases per day, or 3,600,000 total, which means he's using the lowest rate possible, or 7% of infections]

The Bad News: High valley. Although a decline in transmission is always good, we're headed toward what is likely a very high valley in October at 700,000 infections per day, and then the picture will likely get much worse in November, December and January, unless we see an unanticipated level of vaccinations. Grim Implications. In the "good" times of October, we will still see 1.5% of Americans (1in 69) actively infectious at any given moment. Our low- end estimate suggests 35,000 new Long COVID cases from such infections. That's grim. Media narrative. The psychological dynamics are bleak. Expect the news media to focus on the fact that transmission is going down (the "good" news) instead of the much bigger picture that it's leveling off at very high rates (the very bad news). The over-optimism will likely undermine vaccinations and masking. The narrative should be "plan to take multi- layered precautions like using masks, getting boosters, and using remote options through January," but will more likely be "cases are headed back down."

Unfortunately, has entered our household as well as my parents’ household for the first time since the pandemic began. I’m a little rusty since it’s been a couple of years since the last time I built a but there is an urgent need to expand our air filtration capability. Please be very careful out there, the virus is everywhere and it is extremely infectious.

Not the most beautiful box I’ve ever seen, but it works. And if it keeps Covid from spreading further in our home, that’s all that counts.
