The “great” thing about England is that when these articles come out and you google the person who wrote them it’s not something boring like “their dad is a trust fund manager” it’s “their dad is a baron, their grandfather edited the newspaper this appears in, and their family founded the private Bank of England

Free Software: "let's build free stuff for each other"

Open Source: "let's attract unpaid volunteers to write code we can extract value from"

Meta joining Fedi: "let's reduce our cost by letting unpaid volunteers deal with the distribution load of a platform our users dominate"

There's a pattern here, folks.

I would like to remind folk today of the so-called "Nazi bar" problem:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Nazi_bar

"A space in which bigots or extremists have come to dominate due to a lack of moderation or by moderators wishing to remain neutral or avoid conflict."

You can extend this to Meta. No, plenty of folk joining their AP-enabled service will NOT be bigots or extremists.

But Meta is. Because they already treat the fediverse as a place where "shot-callers" need to be influenced.

Every argument I have seen so far for not immediately defederating from boils down to one of two points.

  1. The security of is rubbish; blocking won't help.

To which my response is: Yes, mate, I'm sure you're also handing out copies of your house key because crowbars exist.

  1. The users of don't deserve to be blocked out.

That's something I agree with, actually. But they're not my responsibility. The accounts on my instance are. Which makes this something...

That is tragic for open source innovation. I will tell you, if that were to happen, there'll be no more open source companies in Silicon Valley.' "

Uh, well, you're just making the argument for copyleft right there, dude.

So many unpatched servers.

Every server that I'm currently receiving spam from hasn't patched CVE-2024-23832.

Please do so immediately if you run an instance. If like me you're using @mastohost - kudos for taking this seriously!

I got my wife Star Trek captain's pips. Yesterday, she wore them at work, in her role as Mission Director. One of her colleagues called out "captain on the deck!"

Between @downey and @aral getting issues with , is it too much to speculate that they're preparing to go along with moderation rules?

Any other, similar experiences? @doot and @nightjar had issues before, Someone got banned for calling Rowling a TERF, me for calling a AfD-adjacent person a Nazi (that was years ago).

Thanks to feedback, I'm unsure if this is new - which would be good, it could just be the same old issues. Can we collectively watch this?

... things in the wrong direction.

The insidious thing is that it is helpful, even while this move occurs.

But the help comes at a price.

Folk in and similar are not willing to pay that price.

That's the entirety of the argument.

Which is to say, by neglecting externalised costs, they make the project appear more sustainable than it is.

The narrative that FLOSS is largely volunteers scratching their own itch is toxic to sustainability. It has a long tradition from other charitable work that heavily relies on volunteer effort. There is no surprise that FLOSS communities engage in this self-deceit.

But who benefits from that?

It's not the FLOSS projects themselves. It's not the general public relying on them.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

What's worth highlighting is that Embrace, Extend, Extinguish pushes from somewhere near the middle panel towards panel 1 on the left.

That's what happened with the office document formats, with email, with the web, even with most Linux distros.

And now it's about to happen with and fedi.

As FLOSS communities, we sit in the middle panel, and are happy when someone comes along with more resources to help out.

Which makes us vulnerable to ignoring that they do so in order to push...

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

But as an adjacent observation to this, a lot of FLOSS wouldn't survive without making that compromise, either.

Which only serves to highlight how vital it is we find better ways to support it.

Because what we're discussing here is how we can prevent things from going worse.

We're not even discussing how to make things better (notable exceptions exist).

@jonny @aud I can give you a partial answer here. The dwarves, for example, tend to be based on German folklore, which in turn has roots in German history. You pretty much just have to visit a mine here to learn about that.

So the TL;DR is that in mining towns, boys tended to help with work from around age 4, sorting rocks outside the mine. From around 8, they went to work in the mines.

Contrary to popular notions, mines contain all kinds of minerals mixed together, so whatever the mine...
