The hate in your state. Find your state and see the hate groups in it. The Southern Poverty Law Center tracked a total of 1430 hate groups in the U.S. in 2023. You can also download at least 25 pages that show each and every one of the 1430 hate groups.

William Anders, astronaut on the Apollo 8 mission, passed away earlier today.

Anders took the iconic Earthrise photo while orbiting the Moon with Borman and Lovell. No human had ever seen an Earthrise before.

On the transmission he says "Oh my God, look at that picture over there! It's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"

59 years ago today, Griswold v. Connecticut guaranteed the right to birth control.

Justice Thomas says the Supreme Court should "reconsider" that ruling.

And this week, 38 GOP senators voted against the Right to Contraception Act.

Republicans are coming for birth control.

The only feeling I have about starship is dread.

They want to use that to launch batches of HUNDREDS of Starlinks at once. And guess where all those Starlinks will end up? The pieces that don't make it to the ground will end up in our upper atmosphere, screwing up the stratosphere, the ozone layer, who knows what else because SpaceX isn't required to do any environmental assessments of this.

Shit. Maybe a good time to post this essay I wrote yet again: https://theconversation.com/an-astronomers-lament-satellite-megaconstellations-are-ruining-space-exploration-215653

99.7% of Venture Capital money goes to people that are not Black women.

0.3% of Venture Capital goes to Black women.

The 11th circuit court cited civil rights law when it said that it is racist to stop anyone from having access to VC based on their race, and that setting aside VC for people of a given race is racist.

So they ruled against a group of Black women looking to give their own money to Black founders. For violating the civil rights. Of white men that want that 0.3% too.🙂🙃

Images include captures of messages sent on encrypted messaging apps Signal and WhatsApp, and remain in the captures regardless of whether disappearing messages are turned on in the apps."

In 2024 it still somehow isn't standard practice to ask in the design process: Are we building the killer app for domestic abusers?

Science isn’t “truth.” It isn’t simply a series of facts.

Science is an iterative process. We continue to test hypotheses & refine ideas.

Science is always changing as we learn more.

if you add beam search and custom scoring rules to a markov chain text generator, you can do some pretty fun things. like enforcing alliteration, limiting word length, and adding a bunch of adverbs (corpus is Frankenstein, output limited to twenty tokens, ngram length of 3)

We want you to know the name Alice Ball. She was the first woman and first African American to earn a master’s degree in science from the College of Hawaii.

Ball remarkably developed a treatment for leprosy, but she passed away shortly after.

Arthur Dean, chair of the College of Hawaii’s chemistry department, took over the project, and renamed Ball’s method to the “Dean Method,” never crediting Ball for her work.

Ok, what’s the plan?

Because if it’s one thing that I learned in 2020, it’s that the people and agencies tasked with informing and protecting society against such pathogens are not up to the job in ways that prioritize all and that, unfortunately, it’s everyone for themselves?
