Graphs of the sizes of fediverse instances, how common they are, and where the most people are! 🧵

Data pulled from https://instances.social/ (by @TheKinrar) and excludes pawoo and baraag as they're heavily blocked for good reasons (it seems)

Breaking down instances by the number of users into bins (that are quasi human friendly logarithmic), we see that the majority (55%) have 2-50 users, ~33% have 1 user, and almost all instances have less than 5,000 users.

So, is it time now for "spread mastodon/fediverse" to adapt somewhat and spread the "" (my moniker, fediverse for reddit-like platforms, eg and )

The energy and pickup in users seems real. Lemmy is def more active, and there's a growing sense of the Reddit-migration happening. (See, eg, https://lemmy.ml/post/1148886?scrollToComments=true, https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/140op93/host_your_own_community_if_reddits_api_rules_go/)

But the platforms probably need help. Instances, communities, documentation, tutorials, forks etc.

Former reddit app Sync now available (in beta) for lemmy.

https://lemmy.world/post/2515668

See also the app's community if you're interested: https://lemmy.world/c/syncforlemmy

The story here, AFAIU, is that it's the same developer porting the app from a reddit to lemmy backend. I've never used it, but android users have been excited for it from what I've seen.

So, I think I've dug as deeply into the drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.

  • Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.

Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.

If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.

core devs have started work on a new front end using leptos (a frontend framework).

They're interested in getting "proper" front end UI devs to help out while they focus on the core backend focused parts

Seems that there’s a lemmy bug to do with federation outside lemmy that has the devs somewhat stumped. It’s only in the latest version.

They’re hoping masto admins can check their logs to see what’s going on. The issue is that comments and posts aren’t federating to and can’t be found through search from non-lemmy instances.

See thread https://social.wake.st/@liaizon/110616309595225005 and get any admins to help if you can.

Lemmy.world is current under some attack.

Seems an admin had their credentials hacked and the bad actor was defacing the webpage and posting as the admin.

There were attempts to clean it up that apparently didn’t entirely succeed as the hacker somehow resumed defacing things.

As of now, the site is down. Logging in may not be a good idea. Given the time, Ruud is probably still asleep and assistant admins are on it.

It already had search (with some rough edges), but people are already making their own to fill specific needs ... chiefly it seems to replace the Google site: reddit.com search facility.

People are actually on BlueSky

There's now a decent measurement of user numbers (https://bskycharts.edavis.dev/edavis.dev/bskycharts.edavis.dev/bsky_users_total.html) ...

They've got about 1.6M MAUs ...
& 0.8M Weekly unique users & 0.340M Daily.

That's not nothing!

Roughly double mastodon and 60% more than the whole fediverse (by MAUs, see fedidb.org).

Bluesky is quite "international" with large Japanese and Brazilian popltns, and there's real attrition happening IMO.

Still, let the protocol wars begin I suppose?

settles on its big central instance: lemmy.world () run by @ruud

Its numbers are now big enough to be counted amongst the top 5-10 masto instances! (https://fedidb.org/network/instance/lemmy.world) as become the “second platform” by size.

Apart from running it well and keeping up to date (recent update seems to have gone well, with a nice example of instances and admins helping each other!?), some redditers seek the big instances?? Curious how communities will adapt.

Lemmy is experimenting with plugins.

https://lemmy.ml/post/15187879

Still in experimental prototyping stages it seems, but cool to see. Hope it gets worked on and works out well.

Could be an interesting experiment for the Fedi in general?

It’s using rust’s extism, so webaasembly for plugins.

Decent Decentralisation

https://berjon.com/decent-imaginaries/

Good counter to the focus on protocols.

> a protocol needs to achieve two things: it needs to prevent the accumulation of power imbalances between parties … and it needs to make it easy for users to cooperate in building the the rules they want for how the protocol's operation affects them … the success of decentralisation and … of a democratic digital world rides not only on liberation but also on organising.

Huh ... the mildly pro-mastodon attitude of Apple continues to manifest: https://apps.apple.com/story/id1668483560

Someone I know theorised a while back that Apple might actually venture into the current social media fray (basically because of their walled-garden/ecosystem, a richer social medium within it might make sense, and opening it up a little might be a lesson they're interested in learning).

Nice new addition to lists in the neuromatch fork of mastodon: exclusive lists, which remove content from the home timeline (see link below).

has something similar where you can add someone to a list without following them.

Increasingly it feels like we’re heading toward fully controllable feed management. Hopefully we get there without just making a mess of incoherent choices.

Kris Nova, founder of hachyderm and Nivenly, has been reported to have passed away: https://nivenly.org/blog/2023/08/19/an-announcement-regarding-kris-n%C3%B3va/

> It’s been a wild week or so watching people who I thought hated centralized social networks because of the harm they do giddily celebrating …

> What I cannot make sense of is the belief that any particular implementation of open networking is such an obvious, uncomplicated, and overwhelming good that it’s sensible and good to completely set aside the horrors in Meta’s past and present to celebrate exciting internet milestones.

What, I see in @kissane ‘s article (https://mas.to/@kissane/111620930081617737) is a call out for those who resonate with the piece that the embrace of by and advocates marks the beginning of the end of our relationship with this place.

Erin outlines I think how this maybe isn’t the place we were looking for. Not run by the people we thought.

How we might want to look for and think about where to go or what to build next, even if it’s only a fork or instance away.
