Devs! Reminder: some of my app round-ups are being resurrected from a long sleep. If you have created a new and fab iPhone or iPad app during the past year, or massively updated one, email me. I’m also on the lookout for new and interesting Android apps.

I had the opportunity to see the FROM A PLANE on a flight from BWI to AVL tonight! Stunning, and very ghostly to see it with my own eyes for the first time. What a great time for a geomagnetic storm :)

I’ll post an update if I happen to get Fantastic 4 power after this, isn’t that how that movie starts?

🆕 blog! “Bank scammers using genuine push notifications to trick their victims”

You receive a call on your phone. The polite call centre worker on the line asks for you by name, and gives the name of your bank. They say they're calling from your bank's fraud department. "Yeah, right!" You think. Obvious scam, isn't it?…

One of the things I've really enjoyed about @longplay is the prompt to re-listen to albums from long ago. This week has been Ben Lee's "Awake is the New Sleep”. (https://album.link/au/i/1576171140)

It's funny, because it is a bit of a lumpy album (Pitchfork gave it a 2.9 which I think is harsh), but it brings me back viscerally to a particular time in my life.

This is your reminder to go back and listen to music from important times in your life. And to support great indie apps.

Longplay 2.2.5 is out now.

This is primarily for folks with a Vision Pro: the immersive space now let's you view all your albums and adjust their size, and there are in-app volume sliders available now.

Plus more. Relevant to iOS is that playlists have received a small style tweak and there's a fix for Last.fm scrobbling:

I wrote this up in part because I'm tired of hearing people complain that LLMs aren't useful. There are many valid criticisms of them as a technology, but "not being useful" should not be one of them https://simonwillison.net/2024/Mar/22/claude-and-chatgpt-case-study/#llms-are-useful

School streets of Paris, something that the residents of Edinburgh can only dream of...

While children get run over by trucks, some Cllrs claim that making the streets safer would cost too much and might delay buses, even though there is no substantive evidence that either is true...

Longplay is a fantastic album-oriented Apple Music player from @nighthawk that I reviewed last year: https://www.macstories.net/reviews/longplay-2-0-an-album-oriented-apple-music-player-with-loads-of-new-features/

Now it works with the Vision Pro too, with a beautiful immersive design. My review on @macstories: https://www.macstories.net/reviews/vision-pro-app-spotlight-longplay-adds-immersive-album-listening/

Longplay 2.2 for iOS is available now. It brings search, many new Shortcuts actions, an album inspector, and more.

The many new Shortcuts actions let you automate building collections or populating the album queue. You can filter albums by many properties, and then view those in the app like an ad-hoc smart collection.

A modest request, from authors and other artists (like app developers and so on) — if you like someone’s work, it REALLY HELPS if you give it a star-rating in relevant online stores.

It’s not about vanity, or word-of-mouth; those ratings algorithmically determine whether the book/app/etc is promoted to others, which in turn affects sales/downloads, and thus livelihoods. They control visibility!

You don’t have to write a review, which I know can be difficult, but please click the stars! ★★★★★

With Vision Pro and visionOS being an all new platform with an all new interaction model, I really hope developers take the time to make the most of the extensive accessibility support Apple has built for the platform so that everyone can enjoy it.

As someone with low vision myself, I still want to enjoy your apps, but may need to bump up Dynamic Type beyond what I would on an iPad, or occasionally use VoiceOver or Zoom, and I hope apps will accommodate that.
