“Can a Neuromancer TV Series Still Work After The Matrix?” asks man who hasn’t read ‘Neuromancer’ and doesn’t actually get ‘The Matrix.’

pete_wright,
@pete_wright@nlogic.systems avatar

@maxleibman should be an interesting series - I’ve purposefully been avoiding any info about how they are doing it so I can go in unbiased when I eventually back it up off the internet. I feel they did a good job so far with Foundation on so fingers crossed.

If you use brew’s curl on macOS, are you really using it? I installed and had curl setup a couple of years ago. Today it appears that curl was now pointing to Apple’s version, which has this issue (https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2024/03/08/the-apple-curl-security-incident-12604/). Looks like brew doesn’t add a symlink for curl to /opt/homebrew/bin. Running ln -s /opt/homebrew/opt/curl/bin/curl /opt/homebrew/bin resolved the issue.

pete_wright,
@pete_wright@nlogic.systems avatar

@feld @outofcontrol @sun

i never trusted brew - i've had to help too many developers fix up their environments after brew got too crafty for its own good. fortunately pkgsrc/pkgin works really well on macOS and pretty much every other unix.

These types of articles try to trick you into setting up a business where you import Chinese garbage and flip it on eBay and Etsy as some "get rich easy" scheme.

It doesn't work, and you'll just end up in tons of debt and sitting in a mounting of bad quality products you can't move. It's almost as bad as MLM schemes

pete_wright,
@pete_wright@nlogic.systems avatar

@feld

don't forget it destroys any possibility of the people who make real things from being able to use Etsy at all. It's all drop shippers and SEO advertising now - its wild how far they've fallen from their origins.

Who decided to call it Soccer?

Was it Big American Football?

Why didn't we just call our Football American Rugby?

Would have solved everything.

pete_wright,

@CoachMark wasn’t it called soccer in the UK until recently as it was an abbreviation of Association Football?

I was always partial to calling American football American Hand-Egg Ball as one of my Irish friends called it 😅

Hoo boy. I'm not naming names because I don't want to fan the flames, but the knives are out:

Events around have rightly emboldened volunteer-driven open source projects to take their hyper-wealthy downstream users to task.

Wild to think that many large companies have hollowed out their open source program offices (OSPOs), the internal teams who have been working on addressing these resource issues.

I fear this will get worse before it gets better.

pete_wright,
@pete_wright@nlogic.systems avatar

@josh

i dunno, in the US we should just tax these companies then give grants or outright jobs to OSS maintainers with a steady paycheck and govt benefits. its pretty clear its not in the best interests of todays monopolies to keep doing the low level work that makes the internet sustainable.

Publishing ports explicitly to private networks should not be accessible from LAN hosts · Issue · moby/moby https://github.com/moby/moby/issues/45610

This is crazy, why aren't they using separate routing tables so another host on the LAN can't send you traffic and have it happily forwarded into the docker network???????

pete_wright,

I just don't think linux was built in a way to be container friendly from the get go. at least compared to freebsd or solaris. no coherent userland, history of poorly documented core stuff like packet filters and systemd. and the fact that it was sold to linux users as a way to get around packaging software doesn't help either.

pete_wright, to random
@pete_wright@nlogic.systems avatar

if you are shocked about how a hidden change to a release tar ball can backdoor ssh, wait until you see whatever the hell people are doing in the docker/linux-container ecosystem 😅

altho i'm sure we all have fully audited the containers that get slurped into your ci/cd pipeline on say circleCI or github actions right?

i looked at some of the default ones once and wept...

@pete_wright@nlogic.systems avatar

@tess @Geoffberner

"What chafes critics, even those who might consider themselves progressive, is that they expect reconciliation to instead look like a kind of reversal, rewinding the tape of history to some museum-diorama past. Coalitions of neighbours near Iy̓álmexw and Sen̓áḵw have offered their own counter-proposals for developing the sites, featuring smaller, shorter buildings and other changes. At the January hearing for Iy̓álmexw, one resident called on the First Nations to build entirely with selectively logged B.C. timber, in accord with what she claimed were their cultural values. These types of requests reveal that many Canadians believe the purpose of reconciliation is not to uphold Indigenous rights and sovereignty, but to quietly scrub centuries of colonial residue from the landscape, ultimately in service of their own aesthetic preferences and personal interests. "

pete_wright,
@pete_wright@nlogic.systems avatar

@Geoffberner @tess

"Likewise, the return of Sen̓áḵw to the Squamish people was only achieved after decades of court battles. Across the country, Indigenous nations have grown tired of waiting around for Canada to voluntarily uphold its end of the reconciliation bargain. Instead, they’re holding Canada and its citizens to account—not by request but by right, to claim the power long denied them. It’s that demonstration of power that makes some Canadians uneasy—Sen̓áḵw just happens to be a particularly and literally towering example of this sovereignty in action, one rising up from the heart of a major city. "

Here's a thought - its their fucking land, and they are entitled to find ways to gain the same generational wealth that white people have done for ages without people white knighting themselves dictating the terms on how to obtain this. Are we that worried that they'll be successful and we'd have to learn something from them?

7 EOL is such a huge event for the industry, that everyone is trying to get a share of it with good and bad intent and marketing.

There are so many unresolved questions, postponed decisions and just poor planning, which all are exploding in that very last moment, because 10 years ago everyone just decided not to think about "complex stuff".

I don't even want to argue on CentOS or RHEL side. Make your own choices.

I want to say - piling up problems for 10 years is bad.

Amazon Linux 2023 does one better and barely supports auto-update on boot. They want you to always use the latest AMI which changes every week or so with no predictable schedule - it’s such a shit show when distro maintainers have contempt for their users.

Apple Orders 'Neuromancer' Series Based on William Gibson Novel https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/apple-neurmancer-series-william-gibson-1235925640/

@feld @alex I think it’s the same thing as everyone thinking you can only “do OPS” by using k8s. The thing is if he just had a small server and Apache his site would have fallen over during the ddos and a) would have realized something was bad and b) probably had a chance to stop the attack. Small is good lord of times.

But everyone needs to pretend their shitty site is a FANG company and then get all surprised when they learn it costs real money to have that scale.

one day i hope to see a good dog owner stand up to the countless really bad dog owners out there. alas today wasn't the day after i watched a dog take a dump in the middle of Pete's coffee causing a random patron to clean it up.

not one dog person said anything like "hey, your dog took a dump in the middle of a restaurant. get your shit together man". instead it was all "aww such a cute furbaby" and other nonsense.

pete_wright,

i'm shocked because the dog owner was an older, rich white guy. all the people infected with dog brain worms were also old, rich white people.

they've historically proven to be such good custodians of preserving the public commons. lol
