Have y'all ever had someone act like you were hurting them somehow by just liking a food?

Any time I buy or make kimchi, my Mom says it's so gross and she doesn't want any and just on and on. I never offer it to her, or make group food with it, but for some reason she seems offended by it, and I don't know why.

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@RickiTarr I found a store in Baltimore that sold Kim Chi. I bought it, ate it, it was great. My room mates complained about the smell in the refrigerator. I ignored them. Until one day I ate some and went up 2 flights of stairs and across the house to my friend Carl's room. I talked to him. He started looking around all over the place. I asked what he was looking for. He said "I think a rat died and is rotting here." It was my breath. I ended up tossing the rest of the Kim Chi.

@RickiTarr I love Kim Chi. It smells rank.

There are also some cheeses I love that stank.

You know the word queue is French, because they literally could have just spelled it "q", but there's four silent nonsense vowels at the end of it instead.

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@RickiTarr About 40% (proctonumerology, but kinda true) of written French is never pronounced. And good written French relies on conjugations that were dropped in spoken French in the 1800s. The whole game is making the language needlessly flowery and complicated to separate the true pedants from the wannabes.

C'est la raisson pourquoi qu'on fasse la langue comme cela. Ca y est.

It is pretty amazing that the United States government has been able to sell "home of the free" "best nation on earth" for as long as it has.

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@Mary625 it is kinda easy to do that if everyone knows nothing about other countries.

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@SoftwareTheron @RickiTarr Although I am certain you did not mean this sarcastically or ironically, it should be read that way.

What country could this possibly refer to?

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@SoftwareTheron @RickiTarr I am assuming USA. There is homelessness everywhere but the US social "safety net" is subpar. EU/UK seem to be trying to catch up with being cruel to the poor, but we have a head start.

Alright, I'm not normally a person who talks about my dreams, but I usually have cinematic dreams and this one didn't have an ending, and I need your creativity.

I dreamed I was working at a Mental Health Institution. We were having some kind of government inspection, it seemed really off, they were paying special attention to certain patients. I inadvertently found out that they were from some shadowy organization, and they believed that certain people who had schizophrenia and delusions were actually seeing into alternate realities, and they were planning on taking them for training of some kind. It surprised me so much, that it actually woke me up, and I couldn't finish the dream. What would they use this for and why? Help me finish this in my brain!

@RickiTarr DARPA did paranormal research. Jon Ronson's "Men who stare at goats" that documentary fits this

rrb,

@RickiTarr I had a stranger dream lately. I was in a store that sold BOOKS. The walls were all shelves full of BOOKS. The employees all read and talked about BOOKS. I have yet to come back to reality after that disturbing dream.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr Upstate SC very close to John C Calhoun's plantation where they recently discovered a mass grave of former slaves.

Pros: Weather very pleasant and mild. Natural disasters somehow always miss us. Uncrowded and cheap for now (They are trying to change that). College town. Inhabitants nice and easy to deal with.

Cons: Politicians are amazingly stupid. NYTimes story about how attractive our area is for conservatives living in blue states to move here.

@arisummerland @RickiTarr If you go up into Western NC they have stores selling delta-9 all over the place, too.

Hard to believe that weed is illegal in Asheville. GA has medical.

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@RickiTarr @arisummerland I was wondering about it. Asked my friends who keep raving about Durban poison about delta-9. They turned up their noses.

rrb,
@rrb@allthingstech.social avatar

@RickiTarr @arisummerland I prefer Sylva. No weed, but some OK restaurants. I liked the duck soaked in bourbon. My wife thought the staff looked like the banjo scene from Deliverance

You're not in the way, your body isn't taking up too much space. There is no normal, average is just the space between all the possibilities. You don't need to make yourself invisible, smaller, or less, because you don't meet some ridiculous criteria.
