RIP Bram Moolinaar

I’ve used for decades, recently moving to as my primary but still regularly use vim on servers where I don’t have my full environment setup.

Thank you Bram!

    So now no one on Fediverse gets to interact with her directly about her work on here. Our loss. 😢

    Which is why we'll make it so that this type of terrible welcome is unlikely to happen again. Allowing it to happen to her was a choice. We will make better ones.

Software project I was on was forced to run as a Sigma project. Wasted so much time trying to figure out to develop a software feature following that process. Then Oracle bought Sun and cancelled the project (Rock Processor and Supernova Platform). So, yeah, Sun got Jacked.

    I need to replace my old messenger bag that's a sort of loose one with someone with more structure—both pockets and internal places to store things and a little more rigidity. I carry a MacBook Pro and a small mirrorless camera, sometimes with an extra lens or two. Does anyone own this Mack Weldon or have other ideas? https://mackweldon.com/products/ion-briefcase-navy-heather?variant=40192332202097

    The MCU has reached a point where I can't even convince my wife to watch Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, even though she liked both of the other movies and even though I've seen it and told her it's good, simply because she cannot fathom an MCU film made in 2023 is even remotely watchable.

    @rodhilton MCU exhausts me at this point. The endless tie-ins, if you haven’t seen every scrap of TV series and movie, following the plot points gets challenging. Enough. I want to see something new.

    In the 80's there was a game called Hack. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack_(video_game) ) It was a text based dungeon game & I played it ALL the time.

    The player character (@), and monsters, are represented by letters & symbols using ASCII.

    It was a copy of a copy so I don't know what the original disk looked like, but this was mine.

    (Very similar to Rogue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_(video_game) )

    Katherine Yang & Steffi Che made a game similar to these called Storehouse. I'm so stoked to play this.

    A note to the roughly 5 other people on the planet who run their own mail server - do you reject the spam/scam/malware source of the email (returning a reject automagically) or do you let the process quietly discard it? I do the latter.

    It made sense when a lot of people ran their own mail servers (mainly businesses) as it could delay and maybe prevent some from recently the bad email before the source got added to a block list, but now with everyone using something like gmail (BTW a huge source of spam in recent years) it doesn't seem worth it.

    sigsegv,
    @sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

    @simplenomad depends on the stage. If it’s caught by spamassassin no message to the remote. If it’s a rule during the connection then there is a reject msg.

    Georgia, the peach state, is out of peaches. Here's why, and how locals are coping | CNN Business

    https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/15/business/georgia-peach-shortage/index.html?utm_term=link&utm_source=twCNN&utm_content=2023-07-15T11%3A54%3A23&utm_medium=social&t=r_xCXP79vPQEsg9jM-qE1g&s=09

    The Peach State lost more than 90% of this year’s crop after a February heat wave followed by two late-spring frosts. The triple-whammy destroyed peach varieties specifically bred to survive different weather scenarios and wildly inflated prices of the fruit. It also moved much of the local market — in some cases, quite unwillingly — to California peaches.

    I just stumbled across what looks like a crime scene which consisted of a jacket, shoes, obituary Lyke Bryan CD's and other stuff thrown at the end of my subdivision. I called the cops to let them know just in case someone may have gotten hurt and kept trying to give them the lady's name and car information that was on an auto-shop receipt but they weren't interested in the information. Anyways, all the stuff was gone by the time they got here, but yeah, cops don't solve crime.

    sigsegv,
    @sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

    @BlackAzizAnansi That sounds like a dump of the contents of a stolen bag. They went through, grabbed what they wanted and dropped the rest. Maybe it was a nice bag. Some years ago had a rental car broken into and bags taken. Got the bags and most of the contents back when it was reported to police in some bushes. Electronics all gone though.

    PCalc for iOS is 15 years old today, which does not seem possible. As the Mac version is just over 30 years old, that also means at some point very very soon, the iOS version will have been around for more than half of PCalc's entire existence.

    If you bought it on day one, I hope you have appreciated the one and a half decades of free updates, and I shall direct you to the tip jar 😉

    The About screen for PCalc 1.0.2, which is a lot less exciting that today’s.
    The settings section, which isn’t actually very different, aside from the retro iOS theme.

    I will be giving a keynote at both Blue Team Con and WWHF about lessons I have learned in a decade of mentoring job seekers and career changers in cybersecurity, but here is one tip for free right now - never give greatly more to a company than they generally return to you. If they pay you to do a job, do a good job at it. Have integrity! But don't go overboard in perpetual overtime or free work, missing time with family, losing your health in a way they would never commit to you - most organizations today in the US will lay you off and replace you in a moment. If you die, they will replace you.

    If they go above and beyond for you in real, meaningful ways, return that loyalty and commitment in kind. But never gratuitously more. You only live one life, and your job is not your family. It is a contract for labor, and if you are lucky one you learn from and somewhat enjoy.

    sigsegv,
    @sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

    @hacks4pancakes Excellent tip. A job is transactional, they aren’t my “family”. Their primary goal is profit, not my health and well being.

    sigsegv,

    @joelanman Context dependent. In bash for example, single to avoid internal expansions, double to allow embedded expansions.

    C, always double for strings and single for for a char ‘cause that’s how it works.
