I saw a post yesterday questioning why the U.S. is investing in projects for electric vehicles but not investing in public transportation. That’s just false.

First, we aren’t getting rid of cars. We are too spread out and it’s doubtful that public transportation will be available in entirely where everyone, everywhere, at every time of day will need it. And we will always need vehicles for emergency services like ambulances and fire trucks and mail delivery and farms. 1/4

sigsegv,
@sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

@TonyStark meanwhile my county rep, Jim Desmond, cares more about adding lanes to freeway as an answer to congestion. He opposes many mass transit options, favoring larger roads and more cars. He’s against funding for mass transit. My view, make mass transit free to all. It’s not supposed to be a profit center.

Well, this is new. I just had an app crash so hard that it DELETED ITSELF. The Shapr3D app that i was just using, and just crashed no longer exists on my mac. I've been using macs since long before OSX and I've NEVER heard of an app doing this before.

🤯

sigsegv,
@sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

@masukomi Maybe it’s the other way around and the app crashed because it had been deleted? Was the app obtained through App Store and maybe got deleted as a result of an “update”?

people like to say "git is hard" or "the ux is hard to navigate" but the truth is git makes things much easier than other source control systems

for example, stuff like "overwrite my changes" or "delete my commit" are a thousand times easier in git than in anything else

sigsegv,
@sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

@tef When I think about git being hard it’s often related to the flexibility. If there were more constraints on what is possible, it would be easier, but then would it be as useful?

It might be more approachable if some of the terms were less opaque and if there was more consistency but overall, it’s a useful and powerful tool.

sigsegv,
@sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

@c0dec0dec0de @tef I was involved in supporting (as a developer) a product that interacted with clearcase’s virtual file system layer. While it seemed cool to present the managed code that way, requiring kernel code to do source management continues to strike me as a questionable approach from a reliability and maintenance perspective.

My hot take on the Vision Pro is the same as my hot take on every AR/VR/Mixed Reality headset produced in the past checks notes 20 years: "If most women can't use your product for 4 hours straight without throwing up, don't try to tell me that it's the future of anything." I said what I said.

Women can use a smartphone indefinitely without nausea. They can use a laptop indefinitely. A gaming console and TV indefinitely. But XR headsets cause motion sickness in most women in under an hour. 🤷🏿‍♂️

    @Terra @danhulton my read is this is only a portion of the nest portfolio, maybe a part that was EOLd in 2020. This was announced in April 2023 and it seems some of the support may be moving to ADT. https://www.zdnet.com/article/google-announces-the-end-of-multiple-nest-products-heres-what-you-need-to-know/ this is the danger (and likely future) of any cloud connected device. Nest is not closing down, some older products are being removed.

    There's always something new for me to learn in . Today, it's even more registers, and how to insert them into weird places (like inserting the current filename into a command using <C-r> %) https://www.brianstorti.com/vim-registers/

    sigsegv,
    @sigsegv@hachyderm.io avatar

    @annika there’s a great plugin for , which-key, that helps expose registers and key bindings. Maybe there’s something similar for ? I recently started using it in my config and it’s been awesome. FYI, you can directly use % register in a command and it will get interpreted. <c-r> not needed in that context.

    I am working on migrating books.infosec.exchange - it'll likely be down for a few hours while I sort it out. Apologies. Like pixelfed, it's not going well, but unlikey pixelfed, bookwyrm is native docker. A big part of my challenge, I think, it moving from a bare metal install of these apps to the container version - likely much easier if starting fresh.

    I have this sense that there are a lot of people who have been using the command line for 5-20 years but still don't really feel at home there

    (not looking for advice, it's just something I'm thinking about)

    @BlackAzizAnansi 3 years EV, would not go readily go back to ICE. So nice avoiding the gas stations completely. Two negatives: 1) increased tire wear due to heavier vehicle + greater torque. 2) Digital based controls for nearly everything are difficult to operate while driving. Poking a finger at a spot on the screen reliably while in motion is challenging. I miss tactile feedback.

This idea came after thinking about crafting a wood cased keyboard and starting to look at what people are doing. Not an electronics geek though so it’s an uphill project.
