Hi all! I'm still in a newsletter subscription push mode -- with the demise of the bird app, it's gotten really hard to get the word out about projects like this that don't have an internal algorithm to help people find it.
If you like #space, #science, #stem, or just want to support a woman of color doing STEM stuff -- please subscribe! Ad Astra is a weekly newsletter that tells you what's going on in space science and spaceflight.
I interviewed Michelle Yeoh a few years ago about #StarTrekDiscovery and I mentioned offhand that I'd written an article about what seeing her use her accent on the bridge of a starship meant to me.
She stopped and said "Wait, that was YOU?"
And then proceeded to talk about how much that article had meant to HER and how it contributed to the success of the show.
@skrishna Nice article! I'm happy Strange New Worlds has continued the trend of leaving in authentic accents, particularly with Dr. M'Benga. It really makes Starfleet feel like an genuine global alliance as opposed to an Americans-only club.
My weekly space news show Ad Astra is here! Have 10 minutes? Then you can hear about my favorite space, space science, and space flight stories this week.
@skrishna Great fast summary of the problem of satellite light pollution for astronomy! (Soooo many other problems of course, but can't fit all of them into a 2 minute video...) Thanks for making this!
An annular eclipse, or "ring of fire" eclipse, will be visible across parts of North America and South America on October 14, 2023. Here's how to see it.
Tomorrow, watch Japan's attempt to land their SLIM spacecraft on the moon! The livestream link is below, and the landing will be at approximately 10:20 am ET on Friday, January 19. If they succeed, they will be the fifth country (U.S., Soviet Union, China, India) to accomplish this feat!
A few people have pointed out that it's worth mentioning that my newsletter is on Beehiiv, not on Substack.
I chose a service that doesn't platform hate speech, and the tradeoff was I gave up on the other service's internal algorithm and tools for helping people find your publication.
If you have questions about the gravitational wave announcement -- why it matters, what happened, didn't we already detect graviational waves? -- I've got you covered.
@MsHearthWitch Thank you so much for this!!!! It's something I've been meaning to do for a long time, but I'm so glad I finally have the room to write it (and stick with it every week, which is the key!)
There’s a total solar eclipse coming in April, and here’s everything you need to know about it, from how to see it to where to get eclipse glasses to the science of eclipses!
Newsletter version goes out tomorrow, sign up at adastraspace.com!
Morning!! I'm following the OSIRIS-REx sample return mission -- the sample container is scheduled to touch down in Utah at 10:55 am ET/8:55 am MT. So far everything has gone smoothly.
The sample return container separated from the spacecraft a couple of hours ago. The larger spacecraft has a new mission now, called OSIRIS-APEX and is journeying on to study the asteroid Apophis.
