Tomorrow, watch Japan's attempt to land their SLIM spacecraft on the moon! The livestream link is below, and the landing will be at approximately 10:20 am ET on Friday, January 19. If they succeed, they will be the fifth country (U.S., Soviet Union, China, India) to accomplish this feat!
Hi all! I'm still in a newsletter subscription push mode -- with the demise of the bird app, it's gotten really hard to get the word out about projects like this that don't have an internal algorithm to help people find it.
If you like #space, #science, #stem, or just want to support a woman of color doing STEM stuff -- please subscribe! Ad Astra is a weekly newsletter that tells you what's going on in space science and spaceflight.
I want to buy a pair of Airpods Max for some travel coming up (I have a pair already I love but I gave them to my husband because he uses them a lot more) but I also don't want to get something now and then have something new announced in September. Does anyone know if there are credible rumors about new Airpods Max coming soon?
@skrishna They’re not for me, and I think they’d be a really different feeling product than AirPods Max, but that people have recommended them doesn’t surprise me. The Beats Studio Pro have been a bit of a podcast/internet darling this summer.
"After troubleshooting communications, flight controllers have confirmed Odysseus is upright and starting to send data.
Right now, we are working to downlink the first images from the lunar surface."
I interviewed Michelle Yeoh a few years ago about #StarTrekDiscovery and I mentioned offhand that I'd written an article about what seeing her use her accent on the bridge of a starship meant to me.
She stopped and said "Wait, that was YOU?"
And then proceeded to talk about how much that article had meant to HER and how it contributed to the success of the show.
@skrishna Nice article! I'm happy Strange New Worlds has continued the trend of leaving in authentic accents, particularly with Dr. M'Benga. It really makes Starfleet feel like an genuine global alliance as opposed to an Americans-only club.
Context for the Starship explosion, if anyone wants it:
It’s not actually a failure. It would be better if it hadn’t exploded, of course, but most of us expected it to explode. Rocketry is just a controlled explosion.
@mjf_pro@Mark_W_White@skrishna There are existing engineering ethics considerations here, at minimum - something that is often violated in Musk's companies (Tesla, in particular).
And SpaceX staff owns that.
To your second point, I think that pretext that SpaceX was going to be an environmentally responsible neighbor to a sensitive habitat was abandoned long ago by the FAA.
There was a considerable brush fire (a year ago?) that burned away much of the area due to SpaceX's sloppy activities.
@adamjcook@mjf_pro@Mark_W_White break stuff, build fast or whatever his motto is, does not play well with environmental factors and I do hope there are consequences for that
Reminder: As we start getting closer to the April eclipse, places are going to start selling out of eclipse glasses (some already have!) I highly recommend you order some soon, and please don’t just get them off eBay or Amazon, fakes are a problem.
@skrishna allow me to interject in this thread but if anyone wants to confabulate an event complete with any number of things, including Beethoven's 9th being sung (bass soloist and the soprano are filled), I'm looking for a spot that has good acoustics, hopefully with a view of the path of totality, to watch it moving toward us, that is somewhere in the square made where this totality crosses with the 2017 totality
@pewnack It's very easy to take a screenshot and say someone looks stressed out. I've watched them at press conferences and events all week. I believe they are comfortable with the spacecraft.
