Etymology is so cool.

The term "microblog" comes from micro + blog, ie small blog.

Then, "blog" is a shortened form of "Web log". And a "log" comes from "log book", which is a book used to record events on a journey.

So get this, the "log" in log book is because you would use the book to record the progress and speed of a ship by using a reel attached to a chip log... So called because it's made of wood... ie a log.

So a microblog is a small record of your journey.

I think that's very poetic that this very post is a direct descendent of mariners from 400 years ago.

Imagine if we spoke about wearing glasses like we do other disabilities.

“Oh, you don’t need them, just SEE harder.”

“What’s wrong with you? You’re just making it up for attention.”

“Oh, sorry, we can’t make the text bigger, it’s just how we do things.”

And yet, wearing glasses is acceptable and normal. But if you didn’t wear them, you would be disabled! You wouldn’t be able to see properly. We have made a wholesale, societal adjustment for people who wear glasses to the point where glasses are now a fashionable item that people wear false lenses for.

It is possible to make accessibility part of the world we live in. It is possible to do it in such a way that as a civilisation, we don’t even see it as a disability, but as something completely normal.

One trend I keep noticing about interviews with Gargron or any article about “Mastodon” is how often they ask Gargron about “competing” or they write about competing and growth.

Gargron, to his credit, usually semi-dismisses it, but it shows just how lost in the hypercapitalist techno-feudalism sauce tech journos are that they still make it out to be about growth.

It’s been over year since Mastodon and the Fediverse gained mindshare… It’s clear that while they vaguely understand the technical underpinnings, they do not understand the social underpinnings that make it all possible.

It’s like they believe that each Fediverse server is a micro-Twitter that wants to be purchased by a technocorp, and all admins are in it because they want fifty billion users on their instance.

The Fediverse is the “next Twitter” in the same way that the tram is the “next car”.

I was thinking about how Elon Musk was once seen as a likeable and progressive person and now he's... Well, neither of those things. I think the one thing we forget is that Musk got rid of his PR department entirely. So what we had before was curated information ABOUT Musk. With the PR team gone, now we have uncurated information FROM Musk.

It stands to reason that any other billionaire who seems likeable has mastered the art of shutting the fuck up and letting someone else curate their image, as opposed to Musk — who really is telling us how he is, instead of letting someone else do it for him.
