Today in honor of Black History Month, we remember Frederick Douglass, who died on this date, February 20, 1895. In an 1857 address Douglass said, "If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."
Young children don't need toys and technology to learn; they acquire knowledge through observing and being in nature, and allowing free run of their imagination.
I postulate that we adults, who have been trained out of this means of educating ourselves, could benefit by letting our wild spirit run free.

Imagine a world in which there were no color, no variety, in which all the people thought and acted the same -- copying the words, actions, lifestyle, beliefs and dress of media and celebrity "Influencers."
That world would be not only dull, but constricting, coercive, conforming and repressive.
Freedom comes not from following others, doing what they do because they say to do it, constantly being fearful that we will make the "wrong decision."
Freedom arises when we question, observe, learn, try -- and through that process gain a confidence in our innate intelligence and inner voice.

Freedom from #capitalism is the path.
The more each of us refuses to do capitalism, the more freedom we create for ourselves and others. It accumulates and spreads. In our own daily lives, and far beyond.
Get as local and small as we can, in physical consumption.
Reach out and learn from the global community;
Share and communicate.
Maybe meet the folks who will help us build up our own cooperatives so our work doesn't fund genocide.
It's a path to travel with others; no one makes it alone.
It can be done one transaction at a time. Building blocks for alternative systems. Without top-down control dictating the process, we have a chance to see what can emerge. In a way we're being forced to figure it out because a lot of us don't even HAVE money anymore anyway.
