I've jumped in the car before, and just drove to Niagara Falls, but that's rare as I get older.
I pre-plan trips (even short ones) up to a year before I take them (or maybe don't ever take them)
I travel with cats, so cat-friendly (not pet friendly) motels must be found, areas of interest along the way and people we might meet or visit. Cost of gas, budget.. It's extensive preparation.
@Rasta, yeah, I remember when Harvest Hosts bought Boondockers. I was originally a Boondockers member and was grandfathered into the lowest tier, but was pestered so much to upgrade that I relented. The way I looked at it, if it gave me access to one more location than the basic subscription that I would use, it was worth it.
You're going on a flight, it's 16 hours long (yes 16 hours non stop), and there are 5 people in your travelling party.
The seat configuration is 3x3x3: ABC DEG HJK
How would you seat your party?
I want to do C DEG H so we got 4 people with aisle access, means more mobility, you get to get up and walk and stretch your legs.
Husband wants to do EG HJK just so we could get one window seat.
@mariatta Thinking that this is a “rich people problem”. I would be more motivated to solve this if we were trying to safely fit the largest number of migrants into a boat.
Walking through several busy airport terminals yesterday filled with coughing and sneezing people, and every time I saw someone with an #N95 mask (maybe 1 in every 250 people) I thought to myself: wow, that is another smart and independent thinker! #covid#travel
@ai6yr it seems like one of the overlooked behavior changes (maybe?) with the “end” of the pandemic is people just blithely interacting openly while sick.
Almost exactly a year ago (when masking was falling out of favor), the only heat I got was a sneering and rude flight attendant... on a trip which I did, unfortunately, catch COVID (unmasked funeral), and where I was put of commission for 2 weeks. Sickest I've ever been. No thank you!
In November, the MV Lara will start its three-year cruise, for which passengers pay up to $589,356. When the project was first announced, the bookings started rolling in from customers who sold their homes for the chance to sail the world. However, before the ship has even left the dock, there's been turmoil within the company. Here's a look at what's happened so far. Would you want to go on a cruise for three years?
Roaming charges are history! Experience the freedom to travel and stay connected.
Remember when you couldn't activate your mobile #data when you were abroad to avoid high charges? With Roam Like at Home you can enjoy the same benefits wherever you go:
📱 Lightning-fast #5G for seamless connectivity
💰 No unexpected charges, peace of mind
🆘 Improved access to emergency services for safety
The end of #roaming charges has revolutionised #travel and communication, bringing #Europe closer together.
@EU_Commission No roaming charges are good. Next step: fair data prioritization. Without data throughput roaming is useless. Can‘t use a german data plan anywhere in France because the network is too slow, even with a full signal. Switched to a French SIM and voila it works. it‘s magic
Earlier this week, Kate and I finally sat down and booked the rest of our year’s RV stays. With that, we officially have our statistics for the year. What’s cool is we were able to compare it to next years planned route, to help figure out if the trip is too much, or not. blog post probably coming soon.
What used to bug me most is folks who go set up camp out in the desert and then run a generator all goddamn day so they can stay inside and watch television. 🙄
Travel website KAYAK asked 1,000 people about the unspoken rules of travel — seat reclining etiquette, waking people up so you can go past them to get to the bathroom, and so on. Thrillist reports that there was broad consensus on some subjects, and substantial disagreement on others, but we want to know, what's the most egregiously awful behavior on planes?
@CultureDesk I had always viewed falling asleep on a stranger's shoulder on a plane as an indication first of total exhaustion (so it's hard to blame the sleeper). Also seems like a kind of trust in the general benevolence of the random human next to them. Taking up extra armrests is consciously rude and intrusive. (But the real rude thing is an airline so focused on carrying as many cattle as possible that it has more than two adjacent seats, and armrests that are too narrow anyway.)
This Italian #train route reads like a restaurant menu! Parma (ham), Regio Emilia (cheese), Modena (balsamico vinegar), Bologna (salami).. #travel#SEE#AMRO#InterRail 😋 plus they show weather forecast at every stop!! ☁️☀️⛅️
I’ve caught both sunset 🌅 & sunrise 🌄 on the sea!! 🌊 ⛴️ (On the ferry from Ancona to Patras) & slept 9 hours in between! I love #interrail#travel (on my way to #SEE-12 ). Now passing Albania so hooking up on their 4G 😉
Avoid Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, unless you really want to, then go by 8am before the crowd appears. It's literally a single straight path, so you'll get rekt by crowds entering/exiting/taking photos
Go to Kiyomizu-dera first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds
Similarly Fushimi Inari Shrine, try either early morning or evening. Sunset there is pretty nice, but it might get crowded
Kitano Tenmangū Shrine is famous for its success in studies amulets
The JEUGIA Sanjo Head Store is the one from K-on!, if you want to see it
Bookings are required to visit the Yamazaki Distillery if you want to visit
Bookings are required to visit the Kyoto Imperial palace if you want to visit
One ultimate photo is sunrise thru the
Shirahige Shrine Torii, but you'll need a car to go early enough to catch it (about 5am)
I've yet to understand how charging an entry fee of €5 would deter anyone, after they've paid thousands just to get there. Maybe €50 would do it, though if I was designing a system to reduce visitor numbers I'd go for a free lottery.
@timrichards Not yet as bad as #venice. That‘s why people have to act now, before their own cities, in which they pay rents and taxes, got totally taken away from them by the tourism industry. #tourism#hamburg
I just did the single longest drive with a camper in-tow we've ever done. We went 680 miles, starting in Hartwell GA, and parking for the day in Lafayette, LA. I do not enjoy staying in Mississippi Alabama, or Georgia based on previous experiences in these places, so we decided to rip off the Band-Aid and skip all of that in our drive to TX this year. 10/10, would drive again.
@unfunnyryan@alexstandiford@DaNanner We'll be staying at a state park 20 minutes from downtown Savannah for 3 nights and also 2 nights on Jekyll Island plus 1 night just off of Jekyll Island because I'm an idiot that can't read a calendar.
@chrisod@unfunnyryan@DaNanner lol that happens. Yeah that’s probably your best bet. There’s some other islands off that coast that are supposedly better but I don’t go enough to know them.
Love this piece. I've often called turndown service "my old enemy." They have a habit of showing up when not wanted, and putting things away where you can't find them.
@LifeTimeCooking@sister_ratched But there's a difference between a quality business hotel and a lesser one. I quite like a solid business-oriented hotel, practical and lots less frou-frou.
@timrichards
It’s one of things I liked when we managed to get away between lockdowns in 2020-2021, the fact that rooms weren’t serviced during your stay.
Many autistic children thrive on routine and predictability, which can make vacations challenging for them. Here's a story from USA Today with tips on how to plan a trip, choose an airline that provides accommodations for autistic children, and details on what to expect from an autism-certified resort.
@kkffoo and others highlighted to us that the puzzle piece originally used to illustrate this story is an offensive analogy to some autistic people. Here is an explanation as to why. The publication has now changed the image in response to this feedback. Thank you all.
