Artificial Intelligence

Would it be possible to build an application that harvests data from local timelines from various instances to add to trainingsdata for AI foundation models? Or is the fediverse to small to be interesting for that?

@ErikJonker by "harvest", you mean "use without consent" ?

🤖 Noema Magazine writes:
⎧ A right to freedom from automation also involves our ability to make decisions for ourselves within the new context of automated decision-making (ADM). This is a core part of the principle of autonomy that underlies human rights. ADM systems are intended to help us make better decisions in a complex world of options, but in its most pessimistic case, ADM can erode and supplant human decision-making altogether ⎭

u0421793,

‘ang on… I’ve ‘ad an idea…

We carry on with our current development direction with AI and LLMs, etc

Except that all the dot-product matrix multiplication for query weights, key weights, value weights, softmax normalisation, word2vec making, gradient descent and all the other transformer shit, is carried out using only computing apparatus constructed entirely out of thermionic valves such as the 12AX7 or ECC83

Verständlich, heutige KIs können sich auch sehr gut Geschichten ausdenken und lügen.

: "And there, indeed, is where we should put our attention. Throughout human history, new technologies have been put to work to advance civilization, but they have also been weaponized by bad actors. The difference this time is that not only is the technology extremely complex and difficult for most people to understand — so too are the potential outcomes.

There’s a steep learning curve that all of us must be prepared to climb if we want AI to do more good than harm. The excitement about possible uses for these tools must be tempered by good questions about how automated decisions are made, how AI systems are trained, and what assumptions and biases are thus baked in. Business leaders, especially, need to be as aware of reputational and material risks, and the potential for value destruction, as they are of opportunities to leverage AI."

Yuppie!! Mais um artigo megacompleto do Arvind Naranayan no site do Knight First Amendment Institute!!

: "Journalists, technology ethics researchers, and civil society groups tend to focus on the harms of new technologies, and rightly so. But this results in two gaps. The first is an overemphasis on harms arising from malicious use. When it comes to generative artificial intelligence (AI) and social media, it’s at least as important to consider the harms that arise from the many types of nonmalicious yet questionable uses by companies, everyday people, and other legitimate actors. Another gap comes from the fact that public interest groups are often focused on resisting harmful deployments of AI, but at least in some cases, exploring pro-social uses might be productive.

This essay is an attempt to help close these two gaps. We begin with a framework for analyzing malicious uses by looking at attackers’ and defenders’ relative advantages. In some cases, the risk of generative AI radically improving malicious uses is overblown. In others, generativ AI genuinely increases harms, and current defenses fall short. Next, we enumerate many nonmalicious uses that nonetheless pose risks and argue that a measured response is needed to evaluate their potential usefulness and harms. We describe a few ways in which chatbots can improve social media and call for research in this direction. We end with recommendations for platform companies, civil society, and other stakeholders."

: "During the past year, perhaps the only thing that has advanced as quickly as artificial intelligence is worry about artificial intelligence.

In the near term, many fear that chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT will flood the world with toxic language and disinformation, that automated decision-making systems will discriminate against certain groups, and that the lack of transparency in many AI systems will keep problems hidden. There’s also the looming concern of job displacement as AI systems prove themselves capable of matching or surpassing human performance. And in the long term, some prominent AI researchers fear that the creation of AI systems that are more intelligent than humans could pose an existential risk to our species.

The technology’s rapid advancement has brought new urgency to efforts around the world to regulate AI systems. The European Union got started first, and this week, on 14 June, took a step forward when one of its institutions, the European Parliament, voted to advance the draft legislation known as the AI Act. But China’s rule-makers have been moving the quickest to turn proposals into real rules, and countries including Brazil, Canada, and the United States are following behind."

: "The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has spent the last month touring world capitals where, at talks to sold-out crowds and in meetings with heads of governments, he has repeatedly spoken of the need for global AI regulation.

But behind the scenes, OpenAI has lobbied for significant elements of the most comprehensive AI legislation in the world—the E.U.’s AI Act—to be watered down in ways that would reduce the regulatory burden on the company, according to documents about OpenAI’s engagement with E.U. officials obtained by TIME from the European Commission via freedom of information requests.

In several cases, OpenAI proposed amendments that were later made to the final text of the E.U. law—which was approved by the European Parliament on June 14, and will now proceed to a final round of negotiations before being finalized as soon as January."

Yeah, one should always be sceptical about AI stuff.🤪

Yes, this might very well be the case.
