@WTL@mlawton I get very competitive when I play against other humans (any game, not just chess) and it adds a lot of stress to my life, with the computer I can play relaxed 😎 also I like that I can tweak the difficulty, try different styles repetitively… my goal is to beat it once a day but for that i usually have to lose 20 times 🥲
@lrz@WTL my friend used to say, about golf, that no matter how many poor shots you hit, just one good one was enough to bring you back for more. Same with bot chess. If I can win against a stronger bot, I am filled with hope that I might be progressing. Never mind the previous 10 losses, some in humiliating fashion.
@w7voa to encourage girls to play. This should be obvious, but everyone is so worried about finding justification for their bias they can't admit the obvious.
There is nothing like gluing together a bunch of finely cut squares together to help you realize that they are not, in fact, squares, but a collection of 1mm-off irregular rectangles. 🫣
A lot of people will have seen the recent news about FIDE banning trans players. It will probably be surprising, unsettling, disturbing to most people but after a few days will be out of their thoughts.
As a chess player with trans friends in and out of the chess community, it will be an issue that I'll be closely watching.
In my opinion, it is part of a wider range of non inclusive (bigoted) issues in the chess world. I wrote about it, and have been battling on chess forums for the past 24 hours...
@chestas Pardon my ignorance, but I can't understand a need for division in chess based on sex/gender, let alone banning players based on their orientation. I would've thought a chess player is appraised on their rank? Absurd to think this is happening in such days of "enlightenment"...
This is just the first time I've ever played a move that the computer considered brilliant and I want to immortalize it in my feed. This is for me and nobody else kthxbye #chess
Much like pawns on a giant #chess board, the Auxiliary Telescopes of ESO's VLT Interferometer can be moved around and arranged into different configurations.
They all point to the same target, and the light they gather is channeled into a lab where light beams interfere. This allows us to discern tiny details, as if we had a huge virtual telescope.
In case you're wondering why we bother building big telescopes instead of just using interferometry:
Big telescopes allow us to detect faint stuff and small stuff, but with interferometry we only get the small stuff. We need a big light bucket to see the faint stuff.
The fewer telescopes you have, the simpler the shape of the details you can recover (I'm tiptoeing around a lot of math here).
At radio wavelengths we can digitise the signals captured by the telescopes, and then do the interference in a computer. So you can have lots of telescopes.
But the VLT Interferometer works at much shorter infrared wavelengths where this is not possible, and the interference happens for real, in an "analog" way, which limits the number of telescopes we can have.
Hehe. Pojawiły się nagrania z prób do #Eurovision2024 i widać, tam też naszą reprezentantkę Lunę z piosenką "The tower".
:) @szachy
But it does it in a weird way I dont like. Being android you'd think you can use their android app. But it actually opens the game up in firefox and uses screen scraping to make it work with the physical board.
I didnt see google play to install it but this is early release, thye do claim to be adding a marketplace but i only saw one for engines.
Why the hell are #chess tournaments segregated by #gender? I understand (but don't necessarily agree with) gender segregation in #physical#competitions, but there's no #physicality involved in playing chess. #Quadriplegics can play chess just as well as those with all of their faculties. Segregating chess by gender seems completely #arbitrary, and unnecessary.
@sofiav That's a cheap shot. When talking about people getting involved in chess clubs and competitions, I was thinking about juveniles. To extrapolate some sort of prejudicial meaning behind my use of the word, "girls" is petty and dishonest.
@slcw anyone of any age can start playing chess and/or join a club for the first time.
I actually have a friend who's a trans woman who was a quite serious chess player before coming out and then stopped for a few years, and part of what motivated her to get back into playing was realizing that when she was at the top of her game she'd had the rating for a women's title. Women's titles are rated lower, but women can go for the regular titles as well. This is going to devastate her 💔
