For those of you who are on an instance/server that's running Mastodon 4.2.0, have you opted-in for the profile search stuff or not?

@cliffwade Whatever people post on any of the existing social networks, inevitably becomes public anyway. Better to think about it before pressing the post button...

@cliffwade It took me a bit to find it but I am now.

@cliffwade
I think I had, and anyway I would, but, although mastodon.online is running 4.2.0, I don't see the choice in my settings 🤔

    @catsalad @cliffwade Thank you, done (it was enabled, I just forgot how to get there). The "tabs" in the profile settings are not so clear.

    @catsalad @waltertross @cliffwade Is this worth doing if my instance doesn't have full text search? (I.e. does it only affect that, or does it affect other searches too,?)

    @catsalad @waltertross @cliffwade I did have full text search enabled for a while but my diddy VPS became really unresponsive so I turned it off again.

    mitexleo,

    @snail @catsalad @waltertross @cliffwade Can you please the the spec of your vps and the heap size you've configured for JVM ?

    My instance has only 2GB RAM (+ 12GB Swap). Heap size is set to 256mb. Everything is fine so far 😌

    snail,
    @snail@crmbl.uk avatar

    @mitexleo @catsalad @waltertross @cliffwade It's dual core//2Gb. I've not done anything specific around JVM's though so whatever is the default I guess.

    I've got an OpenVPN server on there and it hosts my bots but none of those are much I think.

    It might have just been coincidence but the one time I tried it the next time I logged in everything was sluggish and one of CPU or Ram was maxed out. (I'm guessing ram)

    (Not sure if the cpu spec. The hard disk is SSD backed)

    mitexleo,

    @snail CPU shouldn't be the problem.

    Do you have any swap space ?

    Here's a guide you can follow: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-add-swap-space-on-ubuntu-22-04

    Then go to /etc/elasticsearch directory and edit jvm.options file as I did in the screenshot below:

    @mitexleo Pretty sure there is swap configured. I suspect that heap size thing will be the key. I'll give that a try! Thanks

    @mitexleo So having just set it all back up again it looks to be running fine right now. I did a test before limiting the heap and yeah it was gobbling up all the memory and probably ended up causing lots of swapping.

    Going for 256m as you suggest looks like everything is sitting in a far more comfortable place.

    Thanks!

    mitexleo,

    @snail My pleasure ☺
