just overtook to become the 6th most used server software on the Fediverse.

I have a strong suspicion that, by tomorrow, it will also overtake .

And with how things are moving, it might overtake too – but we’ll see how things shake out.

In many ways, the to is a radical change for the Fediverse.

Until now, group actors had not gone mainstream. Most people on the Fediverse didn’t even know it was possible. Now suddenly, people realize that microblogging isn’t the only purpose for .

Natureshadow,

@atomicpoet What do group actors do in Lemmy?

I know what the concept of group actors is, but I fail to imagine why it's so important for Lemmy. Maybe because I never understoos Reddit and the like in the first place.

Isn't it just one post by one user, and others commenting on it? Where is the group that acts on something?

@Natureshadow @atomicpoet if you mention a Lemmy group actor from Mastodon, Lemmy adds that remote post to the group and then that post becomes the OP that shows up on the Group listing that others can interact with. People then can follow the group, as opposed to the user, and get all the posts on that topic.

@Natureshadow In ActivityPub, an actor refers to an entity that sends and receives messages. Groups can be actors. Hence, “group actors”.

What this means in practical terms is that Lemmy communities are group actors. When you post to a Lemmy community, the community likewise posts to the Fediverse.

Natureshadow,

@atomicpoet Thanks for the explanation of what a group actor is after I explicitly stated that I know what a group actor is...

Anyway, so what does the community post? An "Announce" of my post to it?

  • Natureshadow,

    @osma @atomicpoet Yes, that's all obvious.

But through what mechanism do I receive it? The group actor (hopefully) does not make a copy of my post object and claim it is its own. So, how does it make sure the content sent to the followers of the group?

  • Natureshadow,

@osma @atomicpoet Aha, so the group actor actually never appears as an actor on anything here… it's merely used for inbox resolution by the Lemmy server, then?

  • Natureshadow,

@osma @atomicpoet Yes, but it never appears in the actor or attributedTo fields of the objects I receive.

@atomicpoet if you count the 23k more from https://www.hexbear.net (an instance that currently has federation turned off, but is planning on turning it on soon) then Lemmy is already passed 130k but if we also add Kbin to that (which people have now been calling ) thats another 7k+ Also a there is bot up now at @threadcount thats been fun to watch.
