I hope they’re ok, obviously, but this took way too long to become “official” to the point that no one will be surprised, it had been de facto true for a while.
While things always happen, firefish had a huge and quick drop from hype to death. Whatever happened to kainoa, nothing with that much hype behind it should be able to die like that with no notice or guidance. Some people somewhere failed, IMO, to do the reasonable thing for the sake of the users.
@maegul@noellemitchell I guess the main takeaway away is, people should not be running stuff with out fixing team access to take over as a backup if needed.
Not just fixing, but laying the ground work for that. Firefish had/has a fully branded website (https://joinfirefish.org/).
The vibe was completely "the new mastodon".
I think the lesson, which I wish those involved would speak a bit more about, was that we shouldn't get involved too much with a project unless there are signals that foundations for teams and longevity will be laid down. Many at firefish, I suspect, simply tolerated the excessive BDFL vibe for too long
