I have a suspicion (unconfirmed) that Mastodon has made apps It control default to Mastodon.social

because “which server” was the biggest barrier to move communities away from

EVEN if that is true, the concerns @feditips bring up are concerns I take seriously.

Threading. Back in a sec to prevent stream overwhelm.

Link to @feditips thread.

If you live Mastodon the way it is you should really read it. The magic of this place is lack of corporate control.

I added some questions, not for rebuttal so much as, if any of these are true, does the main concern still exist at the same level?

Because I saw today. It’s not a disaster but it does not compare to the potential of Mastodon.

We need Mastodon, the Fediverse and Activity Pub to maintain freedom of non-abusive non-evil conversation.

Not thst is complete trash. It’s just not the answer.

I have issues with its existence - I see it as the linked in version of Twitter, rather than a true contender.

Some issues:

  • it is still corporate run. Yes that expands resources.

  • but that also includes the ability to quash dissenting opinions, which right now under the corporate eye are “thoughts that are left of American center.”

  • Mastodon is objectively better

For the flaws I have famously complained about?

(Figuring out how to do Twitter chats without overwhelming the stream, the issue with unintentional racism, migration difficulties)

The great thing about Mastodon is that those flaws get addressed.

Then the whole platform seems to improve.

That’s not going to be true of a corporate run platform, as they will value activity over protecting users from harassment.

To bring it back around to center. Whatever the INTENT of centering Mastodon.social?

What can/is mitigating the fact that growth could attract a takeover?

And what can we do as the community to stop this?

Some ideas, offered with the knowledge that I am ignorant of the technical side of things.

As well as new to the Fediverse

1- instead of Mastodon.social as the only default server to join?

What about rotating new signups amongst all the “general audience” servers, big and small?
