Can #podcasting be made to work with #ActivityPub as well as #RSS? Then podcatchers could work like a #Mastodon client, allowing us to interact directly via comments, favorites and spreading around the best episodes via boosts. #podcasts
update: it exists but no podcatcher fully supports it yet.
@wjmaggos I know that @samsethi, @theDanielJLewis and others are working on cross-app comments. A couple of apps already include this in some fashion. I think there are still a some bugs to work out.
I think listening would still be in an app, comments could be in-app, but potentially pushed to a federated location like Mastodon.
We have now exceeded the limits of my expertise. :-)
imo the magic here is that we can make everything natively able to go viral. there aren't separate episodes, articles and videos we link to from here, but the item itself is an #ActivityPub post. creators stay in control. that's our killer app and how we sell creators on the #SocialWeb.
@wjmaggos@samsethi@theDanielJLewis I see possibilities here, if only having the episode player embedded into a post. Other than Castopos, I don’t know of any hosting companies/solutions currently building a “the social share is also the show notes and the conversation home,” which is essentially show notes = mastodon post. But maybe another will do this, or maybe there’s a hybrid option…
@wjmaggos@samsethi@theDanielJLewis As far as going “viral,” probably not just the algorithm-driven way we see on TikTok, YT, etc. But in the much more meaningful sense of actual value and dialog, definitely.
Maybe a different kind if content boost. But much more meaningful long-term.
I'm against basically all algos. I mean via human boosts. I now subscribe to too many podcasts and would instead love to see all the episodes the people I follow etc recommend.
@agates probably it would be useful for the people in the back to state who is the "us" that you're representing. And also what does "has chosen not to work with" actually mean?
Somewhere along the line, the funkwhale developer saw mention of a way to pay podcasters with cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin (which has nothing to do with this and people can choose not to implement it). They then decided to ignore the entire effort.
so is there a podcatcher that I can plug in #ActivityPub accounts into that will treat them like RSS podcast feeds but also let me favorite, reply to and boost episodes?
