Natasha_Jay,

Feels like a good week to tell every non-binary person in the how amazing you are, and remind everyone here that non-binary identities are stunning, beautiful, individual, deep and go so far beyond the 'enby' or 'NB' stereotypes you may not believe unless you're talking with them to understand ... :heart_nb:

Well you're adored, amazing, you've taught me over the years and are still teaching me new things about gender ... including off-grid outside the binary. Plus you take personal authenticity to the very very max. Do I sound a fan? Well yes, cannot deny how much I think you all rock ... :flag_nonbinary: :butterfly_nonbinary:

@Natasha_Jay well thank you! I dunno about all that though, I’m just here, existing (and probably not doing a very good job of it, but still)

@Natasha_Jay don’t get me wrong, I much appreciate the sentiment & the support.

But NGL, the first thought I had at seeing this graphic is, “why can’t there ever be a depiction of a beautiful, happy, middle-aged non-binary person?”

I was 40 when I came out, because, tho I’ve known since I was 6, I never had the words to express it.

It’s fucking hard to learn to be comfortably in my own body as an almost 50yo agender person when “youthful” is always part of the depiction 😔

@Natasha_Jay Love this (both text & illustration)! 💜

heartkey,

@Natasha_Jay Absolutely delightful post. Thank you for making it.

Much love 💛🤍💜🖤 from an Aussie agender person with a family, who's still trying to get people outside of their immediate family to understand what "agender" or "non-binary" even means.

xanna,

@Natasha_Jay preen why, thank you

psiie,

@Natasha_Jay

I think I'm non-binary but feminine, so its nice to see messages like this. The lack of representation makes figuring this out really difficult.

@Natasha_Jay Thank you, you beloved and adored Natasha.

And the images? Well, I am all and none of them 😘

Natasha_Jay,

@imdat But you are gloriously you, technicolor outside and inside. And that's all that matters :heart_nb:

ExceedinglyTransGoat,

@Natasha_Jay To people I'm out to I've been telling them that I'm a trans woman, and while that's not inaccurate, it's also not accurate. I'm more demi-girl or as I like to put it girl... mostly, but other stuff too, and sometimes it floats around to different things.

Natasha_Jay,

@ExceedinglyTransGoat Sounds like fun to explore that fully, I'd say? ☀️

ciram,

@Natasha_Jay I think pointing out that non-binary people are just normal people would be way more useful and reasonable than pointlessly make them look special and good just because of a characteristic they have.

Natasha_Jay,

@ciram Totally! Sadly until we view 'binary' as repressive and even the phrase 'non-binary' as counter-reactionary language ... it's the phrases we have today 🤷‍♀️

For me we all "do" gender in our own way - or should feel free to - and see gendered language as broad-brush, full of holes, stereotypes and grey areas

@Natasha_Jay My gender is Cantor diagonalized! :nb_flag:

Natasha_Jay,

@thatfrisiangirlish Strange, I had your gender down as "higher than Everest, deeper than the Mariana trench, with a few degrees of extra-dimensionality for good measure" 💖 💜 😉

Claire,

@Natasha_Jay I went thrifting last weekend and everything I found is incredibly gender

Natasha_Jay,

@Claire And I love the phrase "incredibly gender" 👍

LukaLoginska,

@Natasha_Jay Being non biney is liberating to many especially those who have suffered a lot under the hand of crushing expectations of gender stereotyping, it can really screw with ppl

so saying "ya know what - I don't HAVE to be anything! I am me, I don't have to stick to any labels" is an emotionally healthy way to process the guilt-tripping we receive from some people

Natasha_Jay,

@LukaLoginska
I think many of us agree. The concept of binary gender is a huge societally imposed and nonsensical stereotype when you unpack and look at it dispassionately and at its various levels. But nonbinary folk get that, or reach that level of understanding

bobjmsn,
@bobjmsn@mastodon.scot avatar

@Natasha_Jay @LukaLoginska Female and male genders each have their own strengths, so a mix of the two is a win/win in terms of personality and understanding. In the present patriarch dominated world it would benefit everyone if more males were in touch with their femininity.

Natasha_Jay,

@bobjmsn @LukaLoginska
And then for some 💎s neither male/masc and female/fem really get even close to covering it. Realms of gender experienced in colour, light, shape and other analogies 😍 :heart_nb: :heart_gq:

Natasha_Jay,

Gender is very societally boxed and policed everywhere ...

I have trans friends in the Philippines which is pretty trans friendly but even so - until recently their culture has had 4 genders -

  • essentially cis male and female (ultra masc and femme, via Spanish colonial influences) plus
  • "bakla" (essentially trans female) and
  • "tomboy" (essentially trans male) plus both the trans ids are historically heavily conflated with sexuality stereotyping

It's changing their too ... becoming more diverse in the u25s

bobjmsn,
@bobjmsn@mastodon.scot avatar

@Natasha_Jay @LukaLoginska I grew up in the Shetland Islands where gender was considered binary when I was young. Recently we sold our home to friends whom we look on as family, a transgender woman and her partner. They tell us the community has been welcoming and helpful, which makes me hopeful for the future of my former home. Familiarity breeds acceptance and better people.

Gray,

@Natasha_Jay Thank you! I love the message in the picture. My gender identity does not come with a mandatory look or persona.
