** 'You carry it all your life': What it's like coming out as transgender in your seventies **

I really enjoyed reading this story from New Zealand a few years ago, so I dug it out to share here after a long search. Because maybe you'll enjoy it too

https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/gender-and-society/125797218/you-carry-it-all-your-life-what-its-like-coming-out-as-transgender-in-your-seventies

Natasha_Jay,

@redrummy I didn't. I tend to avoid a lot of media ie I'm a bit 'out' but send me more info 👍

Having been here and posting as openly since early November, the reason I adore the (or at least my corner of it) is the safety for us and wonderful moderation. It's a joyful, quirky, safe space where people can flourish :heart_trans:

It was much quieter back then, but you know what? I'm here to be openly myself. To post cat pics, chat on tech and politics and whatever. I'm not here for 'reach' and I don't want to read transphobic slurs - which I have also seen on the lemmy side of the Fediverse - it's like reading birdsite stuff. So I fully support servers wanting to protect people like myself pro-actively as a starting point because Threads can be the same, but also much worse given user numbers

QT: can strongly recommend this:

And if you don't follow Ada @ada - the wonderful admin of blahaj.zone and lemmy.blahaj.zone - consider it a big recco, as she's simply awesome btw

It's depressing to see that Mastodon's own Musk wannabe (let's call him 'Biro Spiller') is at it again with his "There are no safe spaces" bullshit. 🤮

I'm getting very close to blocking that instance all together.

Risque, political, interesting, free archery lessons thrown in ... what's not to like? 😎

UK: "I’m the UK’s first non-binary barrister – 30,000 non-binary Brits like me need legal protection

My friends and I have faced hate crimes. Without legal recognition, we do not have confidence that we could take someone to court"

    The Deep-Fried Jam Sandwich 🥪 - English cooking is still alive and flourishing

    https://archive.ph/76q8q (archived, UK Telegraph)

    "The £5 treat is comprised of two pieces of sliced white bread spread with Tiptree’s strawberry jam. The sandwich is sealed together like ravioli before being deep fried and rolled in sugar...

    "Eric Snaith, the chef-owner of three fish and chip restaurants in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, said he had taken inspiration from an old Scouts recipe for a fried sandwich and ended up with the 'intriguing' dessert"

    Comment - actually, it does look delicious! But omg ... the calories? 😋

    Natasha_Jay, to fediverse

    Feels like a good week to tell every non-binary person in the how amazing you are, and remind everyone here that non-binary identities are stunning, beautiful, individual, deep and go so far beyond the 'enby' or 'NB' stereotypes you may not believe unless you're talking with them to understand ... :heart_nb:

    Well you're adored, amazing, you've taught me over the years and are still teaching me new things about gender ... including off-grid outside the binary. Plus you take personal authenticity to the very very max. Do I sound a fan? Well yes, cannot deny how much I think you all rock ... :flag_nonbinary: :butterfly_nonbinary:

    Natasha_Jay,

    @LukaLoginska
    I think many of us agree. The concept of binary gender is a huge societally imposed and nonsensical stereotype when you unpack and look at it dispassionately and at its various levels. But nonbinary folk get that, or reach that level of understanding

    Natasha_Jay,

    @Claire And I love the phrase "incredibly gender" 👍

    Natasha_Jay,

    @thatfrisiangirlish Strange, I had your gender down as "higher than Everest, deeper than the Mariana trench, with a few degrees of extra-dimensionality for good measure" 💖 💜 😉

    Natasha_Jay,

    @bobjmsn @LukaLoginska
    And then for some 💎s neither male/masc and female/fem really get even close to covering it. Realms of gender experienced in colour, light, shape and other analogies 😍 :heart_nb: :heart_gq:

    Natasha_Jay,

    @ciram Totally! Sadly until we view 'binary' as repressive and even the phrase 'non-binary' as counter-reactionary language ... it's the phrases we have today 🤷‍♀️

    For me we all "do" gender in our own way - or should feel free to - and see gendered language as broad-brush, full of holes, stereotypes and grey areas

    Natasha_Jay,

    @bobjmsn @LukaLoginska
    Gender is very societally boxed and policed everywhere ...

    I have trans friends in the Philippines which is pretty trans friendly but even so - until recently their culture has had 4 genders -

    • essentially cis male and female (ultra masc and femme, via Spanish colonial influences) plus
    • "bakla" (essentially trans female) and
    • "tomboy" (essentially trans male) plus both the trans ids are historically heavily conflated with sexuality stereotyping

    It's changing their too ... becoming more diverse in the u25s

    Natasha_Jay,

    @ExceedinglyTransGoat Sounds like fun to explore that fully, I'd say? ☀️

    Natasha_Jay,

    @imdat But you are gloriously you, technicolor outside and inside. And that's all that matters :heart_nb:

    Natasha_Jay,

    I had to reply, simply because the best gendering is playful 💜

    Natasha_Jay,

    @doppelgrau
    If we think of gender as something to be enjoyed, rather than an ideal ... then it's rather fun? And no, I don't think for a moment it's purely a trans thing either btw

    Stoat, to LGBT

    “I’m a middle aged cisgender gay man who has seen all of this before. It sucked growing up with this level of hate in the 80s and 90s, and it’s scary that the UK is becoming increasingly hostile to queer people.”

    Anyone who followed the now dismissed UK General Medical Council (GMC) case against Helen, who set up @GenderGP (the only Informed Consent available in the UK, via an offshore model) in detail will know what an arduous sh*t-flinging exercise that was. Only respect ... :heart_trans:

    "Doctor who gave puberty blockers to children nominated for ITV-backed diversity award. Helen Webberley has been put forward as a positive role LGBT role model in face of trans row criticism"

    UK Telegraph, so typical transphobic dogwhistles and nonsense. But regardless:

    Natasha_Jay,

    @GenderGP
    I was really so happy. Unimaginable strength to get through that, I've read the transcripts

    Not showing my age or anything, but as a kid a Kodak Carousel 600 was what we meant by 'multimedia' tech ... am I alone? Except the word multimedia didn't exist 'back in the day' of course, so this was the equivalent of VR goggles

    It was designed to be brought out for Xmas and holidays, and to torture the neighbours with holiday snaps

    Monty Python "Four Yorkshiremen" mode /on/

    • MP: But you try and tell the young people today that, and they won't believe ya'.
    • ALL: Nope, nope /off/

    Bit worried it's (now) listed in "The Internet Antique Shop - TIAS" ... like what does that make me then? 😂

    Well an over-estronated & renovated trans witch I guess ... 🤣

    My posts are missing something very sorely, and that's me being on main! Because I am that kind of person, too! So have a very small selection of my absolutely favourite photoshoot I did, even though the lighting equipment sucked and the room was too small.

    Natasha_Jay,

    Tally, I swear to god that one in the top hat is some of the best gendering ever 💖
