This is a big deal!

I bought the https://calckey.social domain name in December, helped set it up in February, waited a month or so to get technical issues sorted out.

And now it's blowing up.

Most of the excitement has been word of mouth, and there's been a big groundswell in demand for .

This might spread *key apps to the West -- which is very important for the health of the Fediverse!

Believe it or not, the *key apps, are on a faster growth trajectory than Bluesky.

Yes, Bluesky is limiting its growth through invite codes -- in order to drum up a sense of exclusivity. But they also have millions of dollars in funding, the love of the Tech press, and influencers.

The *key apps have little funding, are ignored by the tech press, and have spread entirely by word of mouth.

This is a story no one is talking about.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

I have a strong feeling that the *key apps might be the next wave of Fediverse adoption.

Mastodon validated the Fediverse in the minds of millions of people.

The *key apps are adding some sparkle into the mix.

lobingera,
@lobingera@chaos.social avatar

@atomicpoet Shouldn't services just work with a browser?

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@lobingera They do but people demand apps.

lobingera,
@lobingera@chaos.social avatar

@atomicpoet I recently recognized this.

Still, we have now educated 2.5 generations of internet users that they don't use a service, they use an App ("is the service really called "Whats" if the app calls itself WhatsApp ?") and subliminally educated them that walled gardens is the normal, the new normal?

jupiter_rowland,

@lobingera @Chris Trottier There have to be millions of Mastodon users for whom the Fediverse is nothing more than an app on their iPhones named "Mastodon" and an obscure black box behind it.

If I were to get nostalgic, I'd reminisce about the Federated Social Web before the Mastodon boom when almost everyone on Friendica and Hubzilla used desktop Linux.

sspopovich,

@atomicpoet yeah, I'm one of them, if only because with an app, you can log in once and stay connected, just refreshing the OAuth token as needed. With a shortcut icon on your device, you can bypass the need to navigate to get to a site, but as far as I know, there's no easy way to stay logged in. The browser can hold cookies to keep a session alive, but once the session times out, or the browser app is closed long enough for the cookies to go away, it's back to logging in yet again.

@atomicpoet
The bottom line is The Fediverse is not all that complicated, as a concept. Yes, it's a bit more complicated than Facebook and Twitter, and that's been a problem, but people do get it with a bit of learning. When they see friends in the Fediverse, having fun and can ask them questions, I think they will love all the different Apps and ways of doing things.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

This *key apps won't be the last Fediverse wave to break through.

Once @pixelfed releases its mobile app, I expect that this will garner a large fan base.

I'm already a fan.

kc,
@kc@social.coop avatar

@atomicpoet @pixelfed I've got the Android version of the app. It is pretty good and fairly Instagram-ish enough to package well to the masses

player_one,

@atomicpoet I'm a fediverse/mastodon newbie who is curious about calckey so I thought I'd dip my toes in it.
As you can tell I have a mastodon.social account but I'm concluding calckey and mastodon aren't... "compatible?"..., which means I can't link my existing mastodon account, correct?

Sorry if this is obvious, I'm still getting my bearings around the details of accounts, instances and the fediverse. 😬

nickapos,

@atomicpoet @pixelfed yeah this is key for many services. Pixelfed, Lemmy and Calkey are the main ones for me. I have PWAs and they work ok-ish but a native app will make a lot of difference.

Theblueone,
@Theblueone@mastodon.social avatar

@nickapos @atomicpoet @pixelfed Can anyone recommend a Lemmy server? Curious about it...

breitensteinart,

@atomicpoet @pixelfed Of course there’s already the for . @vernissage

If the November migration had the smooth UI & onboard experience I'm having with Calckey I think retention rates would be even higher.

For take off I have questions about how easy it is to make a pop culture name, something to buzz to friends.

Join me on Calckey does sound a bit like an invitation to extra maths homework. Sorry! But it does.

Imagine doing a campaign & media buy for Calckey? Sounds like a hard campaign to create.

sspopovich,

@atomicpoet from some of the posts here I've seen about it, it seems like it would be a good thing to check out, although if it's really full of rotating emojis and animated GIFs, it will probably make my 61 year old head hurt so much that I might stop using it quickly. I like the stuff I'm reading to stay still...lol. The only thing that I'm waiting for to try it, is an app so that I don't have to open up a browser, navigate to the site, and log in again every time I want to open it.

lily,

@fediversenews @atomicpoet

admin,

@atomicpoet @lily @fediversenews @kainoa Oh hey lookey there, the boost triggered autoscaling 😅

gio,

is fun, develops fast and accounts the opinion/comments/recommendations of its users

rayrob,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Any chance of adding IPv6 support?

Bigou,

@rayrob @atomicpoet @fediversenews Isn't it already supported?

@Bigou @atomicpoet @fediversenews @rayrob

No AAAA record for the domain, do I guess there is no support.

Im excited enough, Ive never seen a captcha where it requires you to distinguish keyboards from views of skyscrapers.

Best of luck with the initiative

Do any Fediverse Apps display information about the App it was created with?
I think that would really help with improving diversity?

j3j5,
@j3j5@hachyderm.io avatar

@MrLee

Calckey actually does, I was nicely surprised earlier when I saw it

@arinbasu @atomicpoet @fediversenews

Bigou,

@j3j5 @MrLee @arinbasu @atomicpoet @fediversenews I may be wrong, but I believe do it too, simply inherited it in the fork that gave it life.

jupiter_rowland,

@Lee 🌏 With "app", do you mean

project (e.g. Mastodon, Pleroma, MissKey...)

or

client app (e.g. Mona, Tusky, Fedilab...)?

If the former, CalcKey and Friendica show you which project a post came from.

If the latter, I'm not aware that any mobile app can show you which mobile app a post was created on.

@atomicpoet thanks for the search engine.

ArtBear,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews

I keep finding new things I like.

The way feeds was explained at start.

The ❤️

Channels.

The way chats and DMs are properly separated.

Reactions to posts.

The way hashtags don't hijack my cursor there.

I do wish Calckey had a better project name. Sorry!
