Good night.

Liontigerwings,

Is it possible to collapse a tree of comments?

Liontigerwings,

@CodingAndCoffee
every browser on iOS is just a safari wrapper. It's BS. There's rumors they'll start allowing other browsers though.

Liontigerwings,

@BrikoX

@CodingAndCoffee

Nice. I'll look into it. I do feel on the last few years apple has loosened their stranglehold on controlling everything. Things like opening NFC, Safari extensions, and the shortcuts app are a step in the right direction. Made my transition from Android much easier.

Destructdisc,

Does Jerboa work with Kbin? Now that Kbin is federated with Lemmy, could I technically sign in to Jerboa with my Kbin account?

npastaSyn,

@Bero

@Destructdisc

Found this when searching for the same question. Thanks. I guess I just need to be patient.

Hello everyone. (I made this post on kbin too but it seems like this is the official magazine)

I recently joined this site and started being excited posting my videos on different magazines. But then I just got randomly banned by MothraCultist because I was spamming low effort AI content. I have worked really hard on these videos for months, the content is AI generated, not the creation of it, and I have been posting them slowly on reddit in different subreddits, but I just joined here so I have to post on different ones all together. It is not like I went on a magazine and started spamming, it is all over the site.

If you want this site to grow don't let power hungry people like her just randomly ban people, that is how sites grow, with people excited to spread content. After the initial large posting on different magazines I was planning to just post once or twice a day and be active, but I can no longer do it because I have been banned for 1 year. I find this ridiculous.

If you guys think I am wrong let me know, I just wanted to grow different communities with my content because some of them like ChatGPT literally had 0 posts.

Thank you for reading.

MothraCultist,
MothraCultist avatar

@s804 I'll apologise for both the unnecessary descriptor and the pre-emptive bans, please understand I was seeing someone posting at a very high rate to many different magazines and didn't want to wake up to a big mess in my magazines. I've helped mod other communities before and high posting rate was one of the big red flags for bot behaviour. It was not "random" and you also didn't need to troll my comment history with downvotes in retaliation. I've lifted the bans and apologise for being hasty instead of contacting you first.

s804,
s804 avatar

@MothraCultist
Thanks for the unban, I appreciate it. I didn't troll with downvotes for retaliation, I did it as a protest because apparently I couldn't even message you to explain, since you had also blocked me, so that was my way of been seen. I retracted all the downvotes.

How do I set my avatar in kbin? I see everyone with cool little pictures next to their names and I can't figure out how to get one.

EDIT: Solved. I had to click

Username -> Settings -> Profile

NOT

Username -> Profile

Thanks all!

Otome-chan,
Otome-chan avatar

@Harlan_Cloverseed It's in settings, not your profile page. hover over your name in the top right, go down to "settings". then once in the settings page, click on the "profile" section. Don't go to your regular profile page as you can't set anything there (only look).

Mark_Taiwan,

@Harlan_Cloverseed I looked in the Settings page previously many times, but it wasn't until just moments ago that I notice the page is tabbed. Certain UI elements of the site are too low contrast, IMO.

I've had a few days playing around with kbin now, and I really can't say enough good things about it!

It's still very early beta, but it aggregates groups from friendica, gup.pe and chirp and handles them in a smart interface. It also has dedicated reddit like groups (called magazines) that are cross compatible with lemmy. And best of all, you can set up Calckey like antenna for each magazine. This means that not only can you see content explicitly posted to the magazine, but there is a separate tab for content automatically aggregated from the wider fediverse

I've already created a bunch of magazines simply because there aren't many there yet, but I look forward to handing them over to other people once the userbase grows

@ernest, what an amazing platform you're developing!

Dumb question. How to crosspost?

ThatOneKirbyMain2568,
ThatOneKirbyMain2568 avatar

@Gordon_Freeman There isn't a crosspost button, but if two threads are similar, they'll show as crossposts of each other. I'm not sure exactly what the criteria are, but from what I can gather, two link threads will show as crossposts on Kbin if they have the same link. Otherwise, they need the same title (and maybe the same photo?).

ThatOneKirbyMain2568,
ThatOneKirbyMain2568 avatar

@Gordon_Freeman Agreed, though it would be cool to have a button that you can click to make a crosspost. Maybe it'd send you to the thread creation page with certain things filled out to make it a crosspost.

So funny thing about . I post a photo thread. I go to my profile and see the thread. I click on the image preview icon. I immediately get sent to https://kbin.social/u/undefined. Not only is Mr. Undefined a real user, hello @undefined, but somehow my image now directs to his profile.

As I dig into Firefox dev tools to find out why, I see that uBlock Origin has blocked the request for my image. But that's odd, I have no specific blocking rules for kbin, and kbin.social doesn't run ads. What's up?

So it turns out my image got uploaded to the following URL: https://media.kbin.social/media/ad/b2/adb203028331eada7f99f2b4547cbc0a7efc0ba4e203a71d9d193c02d38aa4f1.jpg

.../media/ad/... That's what uBlock was upset about. So by blocking that request, the target of the AJAX fetch is... undefined. Hence my trip to a random user's profile. XD

HarkMahlberg,
HarkMahlberg avatar

So if you're a kbin user and for some ungodly reason you find yourself on Mr. Undefined's page after previewing an image, you may want to add the following rules to your ublock origin list.

How are Lemmy instances able to even see microblog posts ? Afaik Lemmy doesn't have microblogging feature , interaction between Lemmy and more microblog oriented parts of the fediverse should be more limited right ? Unless it was something they recently added , or a 3rd party app that adds it ig ?

Eigengrau,
Eigengrau avatar

@Pamasich Yeah i found out after posting this Lemmy treats microblog posts from kbinstances as threads , but thx for explanation anyway !

@Eigengrau
Out of curiosity, our Magazine owner tested https://kbin.social/m/arknights/p/911556 . Which is why guide to post to Lemmy from mastodon works , while for Kbin it's sorted to Microblog.

NotAPenguin,

Are we not federating with lemmit.online?

It's a lemmy instance which mirrors subreddits.

I can't seem to access it from kbin.social at all.

If I'm on a Lemmy instance, I can't find any Kbin.social magazines or users. Why is that?

For example, if I search for myself on lemmy.world, such as !hamswagwich, or @hamswagwich, or hamswagwich@kbin.social it's not found.

Same for Kbin.social magazines, for example, searching for !TeslaMotors brings up nothing. Same with other lemmy instances. Why is that?

chris,
@chris@fedia.io avatar

...and if that doesn't work, if you toggle the search to URL, and type in the full URL of the magazine - which I guess is https://kbin.social/m/TeslaMotors - then toggle the search back to Communities, it should finally find it!

HamSwagwich,

Awesome, thank you. It works.

I'm very confused as to why you need to put the entire URL, including the https in there? That is so very counterintuitive, is there any explanation for that?

With that figured out, do you happen to know why none of the posts are showing up (or any of the subscribers, etc?) ... for example, the TeslaMotors has been in the pending subscription state for over 24 hours now.

Reddit refugee here with a big question, How do we create a subreddit-like experience here?
Most discussions about kbin right now are focused on the user side of things, what about mods who want to bring their communities to kbin? I'm not talking about moving all the existing discussions and content, just making the actual place for new content and discussion complete with moderation.
Would creating a magazine do this?

When you open up kbin.social or any other kbin instance at the moment, you'll be taken to the "front page" or main page which will show a list of "threads" with the following:

  1. Up and down vote arrows to the left
  2. A title, then maybe a description or some other body.
  3. Under each entry will be the person who added it, how long ago and which magazine it was added to.
  4. There will be a comment count, boost count, and the "more" button for each of these you see on the main page.

Those are "threads" and will have one of the following types:

  1. Article
  2. Link
  3. Photo
  4. Video.

They will not be of type "post."

I used the term microblogging because that's the menu item you have to select from inside a magazine to view "posts."

Looking at my screen which is almost certainly the same as that for kbin.social, after I select a magazine via the "Magazines" menu item at the top of the front page (or some other location where the magazine link takes you to the magazine page), it shows me a new "top bar" that consists of the following:

[Site name] /m/[magazine name] Threads Microblog People Magazines.

By default, when you open a magazine page, it will have the "Threads" menu item selected. It will look similar to the front page in that it will have a list of "threads" with the up and down vote buttons to the left, a title, and some content underneath depending on the type: article, link, photo, video.

If you click the Microblog menu item, it will show a much different screen with an empty text box at the top with the built-in editor, a selection box to the bottom right with the current magazine selected already and some other options.

Below the text box you will see options for changing the ordering of the content below. The content below this box are all "posts" that either originated on this instance, or else were federated in from other platforms like Mastodon, Calckey, etc.

From a user's perspective, this is the difference between a "Thread" and "Microblog" and is a distinction I believe doesn't exist in Lemmy. (I don't actually know though, since I've never actually used Lemmy)

Under the hood, the different types - article, link, photo, video, and post - use different Activity Pub types to distinguish them. I don't know exactly for all of them, but I know kbin articles are federated as type "Page" while Mastodon, for example, sends out posts as type "Note." A "Note" is then treated as type "Post" by kbin and will not show up in the "threads" view (that's the view with the upvote and downvote buttons to the left, the nice title and content in the middle and comment counts). To view "posts", you must look at the Microblog link for the Magazine that the content was created in, or routed into if it is a new post from an outside platform.

I don't mean to sound condescending or rude so if I did, that is a lack of skill on my word choices and I apologize.

I hope that helps clear up some confusion!

@cache_miss

The Why is going to be a bit subjective so I'll try to lay out the more "concrete" differences between creating a thread (of which article is just one type) and a post.

Posts:

  1. Will federate to all your direct followers regardless of platform. If they are using a microblogging platform like Mastodon, this means it will show up in their home feeds just like any other post.
  2. Will not be seen on the "front page" by default since the default behavior is to have the "front page" show threads, not posts. A person can click the "Microblog" tab at the top to view all the posts instead, but that requires a click.
  3. Posts, unlike threads, will display the conversation without needing to click. You can compare by checking it out on kbin.social, but you'll notice that the threads on the front page will just have the opening title and a small description, but will not show the comments or replies to it. If you click on the microblogging tab, you'll see posts along with their replies automatically without need to click on them.
  4. Posts do not have subject lines. This means that typically on a platform like Mastodon, the post will show up without any content-warning masking the body.
  5. While threads are relatively widely supported on other platforms, posts are almost universal due to being a core part of the microblogging Fediverse.
  6. I don't know for sure, but I believe posts don't show up on Lemmy instances. Someone will have to correct me on that, though.
  7. Replying to the OP Post is more intuitive. To reply to a Post, you just have to click at the bottom of the OP's Post on the "reply" link. This is different in a Thread (if you're trying to reply to the OP and not a comment)

Threads:

  1. Have a subject line and a body. This means on non-kbin/lemmy instances, it is likely that any content that is federated to them (Mastodon, etc) will show with a content warning and masked body.
  2. Will potentially show on the front page by default.
  3. Can show and embed media which can be displayed by default depending on an individual user's settings.
  4. Depending on the type, will federate in unexpected ways. Links, for example, that have a description can show on Mastodon without the description (I believe) and thus makes for unexpected behavior on non-kbin platforms.
  5. Threads will give you the option to add Badges to the content when you create it. I don't know when that will be fully implemented, but I suspect it will be a way for Magazine subscribers to "customize" the presentation of their thread depending on which badge(s) are applied.
  6. Replying to the OP's initial content can be more troublesome. For a thread that has a lot of comments on it, in order to add a comment, you have to scroll to the bottom of all comments (or all the comments on the first page of comments) to see the comment box. Replying to an existing comment on a thread is easy as the comment has a "reply" link at the bottom of the comment, but for a thread, the "add a comment" box is below all the current comments.

These are just the differences that I can think of off the top of my head. Also, if I'm wrong on any of these, I hope someone corrects me.

Thank you and I hope that helps.

How do I make a multipart post in a magazine?

I just tried posting the series of parts to my /mag, they showed up in reverse order in the microblog? WTF?

Please, if there is some advantage to this microblog thing, I'd love to know what is, and also how to make a post in my own magazine that does not feature a link.

'Threads/Microblog/People/Magazines' is where simplicity goes sideways in this webapp. It is not obvious what those things are; the couple of guides I've found don't discuss this focal point of confusion.

moohamin12,

Hello,

Does anyone know if there is any plans for a mobile app for Kbin?

It is really the only thing left for me to move to Kbin totally.

BarbecueCowboy,

@moohamin12 There are several 3rd party apps in development, but kbin currently doesn't have a real API for it, so it's kinda slow. I think Artemis is probably the closest to release, but is still in testing.
