I just finished watching the #BarbieMovie. No shade to anyone who likes it but are people seriously upset this film didn't win an Oscar? Even if the #Oscars were actually about the quality, innovation, and art of a #movie, what new grounds did this film cover? It's a potpourri of ideas stringend together into an incoherent film. A #film that can be fun, I'm sure, but this feels like people complaining about Marvel movies not winning an #Oscar because they liked it.
@film For me personally, I don't know what I expected but it was not what I got. I feel like my main problem was that it wanted to be too "meta" and "ironic" with things like that weird voice over "script note" and it didn't feel like it fully committed to the world and characters. Barbie herself only gets crumbs in terms of characterisation, if she weren't played by someone as skilled as Margot Robbie she would be dull af.
Thw furore was more that the only nomination was for the male star, but that the female star and female director did not get a nom. If Gosling wasn't nominated, then nobody would care about the other two not being nominated, but with the two women being overlooked and the man not, it resonated with the movie's audience and message.
@CrypticMirror@film I mean, I don't think the direction is Oscar worthy (if we pretend the Oscars are about quality) but neither is Gosling's performance. Thanks for explaining it, though, I didn't get the full picture it seems.
Gosling's nomination wasn't for best Lead Actor, but for best Supporting Actor. The movie was also given a nomination in the 'Best Supporting Actress' category for America Ferrera's performance as Gloria.
So, while Gosling did get a nomination for his Ken and Robbie didn't get a nomination for her Barbie, that is perhaps not quite the patriarchal snub it's been made out to be.
