@StillIRise1963 Speaking of

'Later this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to ban the use of formaldehyde in hair-straightening and hair-smoothing products in response to mounting concerns about the ingredient's harmful health effects. The same ban would also bar chemicals known to release formaldehyde upon being heated.'

@researchbuzz It’s very scary that MANY different harmful things are in these products. Ugh. I feel lucky thus far that I’m okay.

cub80_appleby,

@researchbuzz @StillIRise1963 Wow! Isn't that used to preserve bodies too?

@researchbuzz @StillIRise1963 my girlfriend in the late 80s would have me straighten her hair with lye. It would leave her scalp burned and scabs.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@MichaelBishop Yep. I used to burn my scalp too. Ozzing sores.☹️ @researchbuzz

I highlighted that earlier, that is messed up, but consistent with a pattern of "developed nations" dumping their (insert whatever shit here) on "less developed nations." This comes to mind as I had a student come for a consult on that sort of dumping (in her case, looking at e-waste but still).

@bloodravenlib @StillIRise1963 They've known for AGES that Black women's hair products are carcinogens.

It has enraged me for years that there are requirements for Black hair to look more "professional" by looking like white people hair. And nobody cares if that means cancer. Drives me wiiiiild.

@researchbuzz @StillIRise1963

Yep, that is pretty much the corporate world, whatever their product is fucking up (pardon my language), they've always known and mobilized their PR teams, paid docs, etc. to obfuscate, minimize, etc.

On a side note, reminds me of this book I read last year. My if anyone is curious.

BLACK WOMAN HERE @researchbuzz @bloodravenlib @StillIRise1963 we've known since the late 1980s. but most of the hype was around LYE. yet so many of the substitutes were so bad to the scalp if not worse, there was a push to have these new products re-tested & re-regulated.

then BILL CLINTON & THE 1994 FDA DEREGULATIONS HAPPENED. everything bad about OTC pharmaceuticals & body care products can be traced back to Bill Clinton. he really was the fucking worse inre: deregulation.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@blogdiva Yep. It was all about lye, so I stopped using those and used the others that kill you.🙄 @researchbuzz @bloodravenlib

@StillIRise1963 @blogdiva @researchbuzz @bloodravenlib Fuck me.

I just checked and there's lye-free hair relaxer aimed at little girls, which, SURPRISE! also causes cancer.

For sale, here in the Netherlands, like nothing's wrong with it.

This is upsetting.

Oh, my Goddess.

I hope their governments and populations lobby towards banning and education about how dangerous these products are.

@researchbuzz It’s so infuriating how they knowingly try to kill us.☹️
