FUND FOR THE BLACK-RUN FEDIVERSE

UPDATE: GoFundMe shut this down. It's a long story.

Please instead donate directly to these great fediverse projects led by and for Black people.

https://www.patreon.com/Wibblur/ is Social Media by the people, for the people

https://www.patreon.com/andcomputers is making blacktwitter.io

https://blackqueer.life/ is a welcoming community for all Black queer, trans, and gender nonconforming people

https://www.gofundme.com/f/a-new-way-to-social-media Ro is making a new way to social media

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

My goal is to raise $10,000 and split it into 4-5 microgrants.

Ideally I'd like to have at least one be a person who hasn't started a project yet, so that this is the boost they need to get going.

janl,
@janl@narrativ.es avatar

@evan might be worth putting that in the fundraising description. Also a note about how the grantees are chosen.

evan, (edited )
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

GoFundMe shut down this fundraising campaign for violating their terms, in particular "Prohibited conduct".

https://www.gofundme.com/c/terms

I don't have any more details from GFM, but my guess is that the description wasn't clear enough, or just didn't vibe with their work.

In the setup for a campaign they say you can raise funds to distribute to others, but I guess this particular case rings alarm bells.

Anyway, please check below for ways to help out!

UPDATE: they don't allow giving grants.

@evan Well that sucks!

randulo,

@evan So presumably they refund any donors which brings it back to square one!

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@randulo 🤷🏽

Yes, all the refunds went out.

So, I'm pretty committed to this project, but it will go slower instead of going fast.

One possibility is having a more formal structure, like some kind of lightweight non-profit, with more engagement from more Black people on the fediverse.

randulo,

@evan Keep me in the loop.

josh,

@evan @randulo Lemme know how I can help

alpacaherder,

@evan I was wondering what the refund e-mail was about. That’s too bad.

    @jalcine yeah, I will try to figure out the right way to do this. I was hoping to do it quick, but it may be slower.

    voxpelli,
    @voxpelli@mastodon.social avatar

    @evan @jalcine Why GoFundMe and not @opencollective? The latter can manage the money and handle the grants procedure?

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    @voxpelli @jalcine OpenCollective might work well. I'll look around.

    toxtethogrady,

    @evan The only conduct that should be prohibited is raising money to arm an insurrection. They should themselves GoFuckYourself...

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    Here's what I sent to GFM:

    So, can I talk to someone about what happened here?

    I’m an Open Source software developer and community leader. I was trying to raise funds to support some of the great Black-led projects in my area of software development (federated social networking).

    At sign-up, it said I could find people to give funds to; it didn’t have to be defined at the beginning.

    I was surprised to see the fund shut down.

    [cont'd...]

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    [...]

    Is there something I could change to make this campaign suitable for GoFundMe? Or am I banned from the platform now?

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    Here's what they sent back!

    'GoFundMe cannot process payments for "annuities, investments, equity or lottery contracts, lay-away systems, off-shore banking or similar transactions, money transfer services (including currency exchanges, check cashing or the like), debt collection or crypto-currencies."'

    [cont'd]

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    This includes using GoFundMe for investors to contribute to a business or for any venture that offers a return on investment.

    Additionally, GoFundMe donations cannot be treated as loans and organizers cannot offer to pay back their donors.

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    The only thing I can think of is that the last two paragraphs of the description (same as the start of this thread) are like: give some money if you have it, ask for money if you need it.

    That might have triggered their idea that this was some kind of sneaky financial scam.

    kevinteljeur,
    @kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

    @evan That’s very unfortunate. This is a wonderful hoisting/rebalancing initiative to help people who are finding it hard to get a foothold in this space.

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    @kevinteljeur thanks. We'll figure it out!

    exador23,
    @exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

    @evan I suspect they think its to fund a for-profit business venture due to a lack of understanding regarding federated social media. perhaps it would have been less suspect if couched in terms more similar to say a public radio station for an underserved community.

    thisismissem,
    @thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

    @evan yeah, funding sites are particularly difficult to deal with in this way, for a variety of reasons.

    You're probably better off finding existing funds (e.g., @Are0h's campaign) and amplifying those, rather than to act as a middle-person between funders and fund recipients.

    rbos,
    @rbos@mastodon.novylen.net avatar

    @evan That sounds like a plausible interpretation. To them it might have read like "we're trying to fund our social media business". I don't doubt they have to deal with a lot of scams.

    This is a very copypaste answer, I doubt any thought went into it.

    opendna,
    @opendna@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @evan Frame your GFM as raising donations for a grant-making fund dedicated to increasing racial diversity in the fediverse. Then you can list "projects we support". Even better if you can find a sympathetic non-profit to hold the bank account.

    I expect you'll need to get the text tight because it's 100% going to get reported by some bullet-head.

    blogdiva,
    @blogdiva@mastodon.social avatar

    @evan maybe this is an opportunity to ask around about open collective and see how they fit as service or even a partner?

    olireiv,
    @olireiv@zeroes.ca avatar

    @evan Do you mention that the money is dedicated mostly to host free services on a web server?

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    @olireiv you saw the previous post that had the content of my email right?

    olireiv,
    @olireiv@zeroes.ca avatar

    @evan Yes, but GoFundMe (or the poorly paid Global South moderator) doesn't necessarily know what Mastodon is.

    I updated the original post so it has the direct links and can do the most good. Here's what it used to say:

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    "The fediverse needs more Mastodon instances run by Black people and targeted to Black people's needs.

    It also needs directories, portals, relays, search, groups, clients, servers and other infrastructure tailored to the Black community.

    If you want those things to exist, please donate to this fund.

    If you are Black and want money to make those things, please let us know, and we'll get you some of the donated money."

    wjmaggos,
    @wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

    @evan

    I guess I doubt that an open system like the fedi can avoid the casual racism etc that pervades life AFK. same with sexism homophobia etc. is there anywhere that does this well? I worry it's being used as an excuse for not joining us here when they actually have other reasons, not because it's actually worse here. but like AFK, our best tool is probably more ownership and power in the hands of those routinely biased against. that's not something big social can do.

    Moon,
    @Moon@shitposter.club avatar

    @wjmaggos @evan worldwide communist revolution would ensure the end of racism and make it stick. I don't think you can avoid problem people a decentralized system in any meaningful way, people that say you can are selling you a bridge. all you can do is mute them and hope they don't grow.

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    I'm trying to set up a system that people can donate money to, that will get funds to Black leaders and builders. I think it may be part of a larger non-profit for the fediverse.

    alpacaherder,

    @evan I’m straying close to the line on my Circular 230 obligations. That said, you may want to consider where your donors are if deductibility of donations is a concern. US persons can’t deduct donations to Canadian charities unless they also have Canada-sourced income. If deductibility isn’t a concern then don’t worry about it. @evan Why would we want to segregate the internet? Talk about propagating racism.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    @Matt don't be an idiot

    Matt,

    @Loukas Ah, the classic ad hominem argument. Love it

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    @Matt as per my earlier reply.

    Matt,

    @Loukas To build trust you should try to be humble, de-escalate and find commonalities.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    @Matt you can trust that I'll keep supporting antiracism. Please do the same, it's not much to ask in 2023.

    Matt,

    @Loukas There’s a clear difference here. I’d like to interact with people regardless of race, you’d like to have white people on one instance and black people on another.

    Next up: black people need their own water fountains and a nice section towards the back of the bus, because they have different “needs” than everybody else.

    It’s racism behind the veil of compassion.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    @Matt no, I want black people to not get harassed by people like you, by any means necessary.

    Matt,

    @Loukas Why is harassment towards black people any different than harassment in general?

    And if I’m advocating for socialization regardless of race, why would I harass black people specifically? This argument is incoherent.

    Loukas,
    @Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

    @Matt Pretending racism doesn't exist is itself a form of racism. There. You learned something new today. Now stop doing it.

    @evan “some” of the donated money??

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    @BegoniaArizona yes, I set a goal of $10K on the fundraising, and I was hoping to distribute it to 4-5 different projects.

    All of the money will go to Black-led projects on the fediverse, but each project will only get some of the money.

    Does that make sense?

    BegoniaArizona,
    @BegoniaArizona@montereybay.social avatar

    @evan yes thank you for being explicit. Transparency is important. I remember donating to Tamil Rice’s mother after her child was murdered by Cleveland police. Sean King raised $25000 and Samara Rice never received a penny. Very cautious about white folks (like myself) collecting money on behalf of people of color. To assume “they” need “our” management or supervision is another form of so-called white supremacy (sic).

    blogdiva,
    @blogdiva@mastodon.social avatar

    @evan welp... this would be helpful indeed. i'll check it out.

    hirad,

    @evan @devnull White man think what’s best for black people! Typical.
    No matter how you feel about it, this is no different from segregation.

    evan, (edited )
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    @hirad @devnull

    Thanks so much for keeping me honest.

    I'm indeed a white man.

    I'm trying to use my privilege and position in the fediverse to direct funds and energy to Black leaders so they can do their work.

    I've privately asked Black leaders on the fediverse about this plan, and they have had positive responses.

    One potential grantee noted that this is introducing a level of indirection between donors and projects, so we'll need to work to make sure to close that gap.

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    @hirad @devnull I've also had some volunteers to help decide how to disburse the funds, so I'm not the only one deciding.

    We'll leave it up to the grantees how they want to spend the funds.

    I think potential grantees who have existing Patreon or GoFundMe projects are tacitly open to donations.

    I don't think Black people making tools for other Black people is segregation.

    This is not the only thing to help make the fediverse feel more like home for Black people. But it's one thing.

    gruff,
    @gruff@stroud.social avatar

    @evan I pondered this when you first posted. It's great you using your position to kick off the fundraiser. Maybe some of that funding could be used to develop resources to deliver more diversity and better moderation skills across all instances? A subtly different approach targeting people and developing their interpersonal skills rather than infrastructure......

    evan,
    @evan@cosocial.ca avatar

    @gruff I'd like to just get money to people who have more lived experience and first-hand knowledge of what might work.

    josh,

    @evan Donated!
