@parismarx That would be Elon Musk's maternal grandfather. On the other hand, Errol Musk, his father, claims that he belonged to the anti-apartheid "Progressive Party".
(I don't think either Elon Musk or his father are particularly reliable when talking about their past, but I didn't find anything more definitive than that #NYTimes story.)

@parismarx when I call him Afrikaner, that’s exactly how I imagined he grew up. Nice to have confirmation. NYT’s “his politics are unclear” keeps popping into my mind. I think his PR has been better than any monster’s I know. Eventually he started the ketamine habit and is spewing everything .🤷♀️

But what sometimes happens is a rebound to ideas you once overcome when something in your life gets out of control. So, is Elon a rightwing rasist? I don’t know, but lately he acted like one

@fiee if Elon talks about him with "great affection" and describes him as holding "quirky conservative populist views", that's a problem though surely? Most people would seek to distance themselves from their grandfather's abhorrent views in this case, not cover them in confetti.
