:drake_dislike: On one hand having to blast spammers is annoying.
:drake_like: On the other hand it does mean that a precious ad-free zone badly wants to be penetrated precisely because it is rare and valuable in this world and we own it. Let’s keep defending it. Thanks to members for issuing reports, thanks to admins for forwarding them to the attacked sources. Together we will defeat the pernicious pollution of #cryptospam
Lots of reports of crypto spam attacks coming in from multiple instances today.
Seems like the bad guys are getting kinda worried about Mastodon.
Instance admins are taking this very seriously and working hard to fend off the attacks.
What can you do? If you see a crypto scam post, don't engage with it. It's just a bot anyway. If you block and report the post it will help administrators isolate the attacker account.
As instance #admin I do NOT want to moderate DMs. The last three spam waves from mastodon.social however were sent as DMs.
I therefore urge @Gargron to make it the default that DMs can only be send between users that have a follow relationship.
The current default is that anyone can send anyone DMs. I consider this to be a loophole that spammers will continue to exploit, causing a lot of extra work for site admins in an area they should keep out of, in the interest of user privacy.
@jwildeboer@Gargron This does sounds like it may be a good solution regarding the #cryptospam issue, even though I had gotten at least one spam via DM over a day ago and had to report and block it.
Right now, I'm just somewhat worried about the defederation of mastodon.social talk that came up regarding this, since I have been on that instance ever since I came here from the #birdsite as I have not been sure where to go and currently have up to 1,400+ toots now which I'm not about to export.
Well if it isn't cryptocurrency spam coming from the biggest, open instance on the #Fediverse. 👀
I wonder if this is at all related to challenges with moderating an instance of checks notes 200k active accounts? Or with moderating new accounts on the only instance actively promoted in the official apps? :thinking_rotate:
Thankfully we can always defederate! What's that? It's the biggest instance so there are real concerns about a lot of people losing connections? Whodda thunk it!
@rysiek Right now, with all the talk going on in this thread, it is making me afraid I may soon be forced to switch Mastodon Instances over some #cryptospam that was going on, and I have been on mastodon.social for around a year. Even though I could move the list of who I'm following along with my small mute and block lists over to another instance, I currently have over $1,400+ posts that aren't able to move.
Another #cryptospam op is running on the default server. Pls report so your admins can suspend the accounts until they’re dealt with on mastodon.social
The speed with which the gGmbH solves this #cryptospam operation is an early test of its ability to attract a higher usership by being the default (and all the extra responsibility that goes with it).
