“The Australian Frog” (Giant Burrowing Frog aka Eastern Owl Frog, Heleioporus australiacus), 1st published image & scientific description by Shaw & Nodder in The Naturalist’s Miscellany V.6, 1794-5, Pl.200.
This large, endangered frog species is endemic to coastal NSW & VIC Australia.
It should be noted when reading Shaw’s rather unflattering description that he was working from a dead specimen - I personally think they’re quite cute, as seen in the photo of a live one! 🥰
This frog spent yesterday hanging out in our garden pretending it wasn’t there whenever we looked at it. It was probably listening to the frogs singing in next doors pond #FrogFriday
