“The Australian Frog” (Giant Burrowing Frog aka Eastern Owl Frog, Heleioporus australiacus), 1st published image & scientific description by Shaw & Nodder in The Naturalist’s Miscellany V.6, 1794-5, Pl.200.
This large, endangered frog species is endemic to coastal NSW & VIC Australia.
It should be noted when reading Shaw’s rather unflattering description that he was working from a dead specimen - I personally think they’re quite cute, as seen in the photo of a live one! 🥰
This frog spent yesterday hanging out in our garden pretending it wasn’t there whenever we looked at it. It was probably listening to the frogs singing in next doors pond #FrogFriday

It's #frogfriday and I return to Peru in about 5 weeks, so how about a Dendropsophus marmoratus, reliable when it rains, and photogenic at any angle. #herps#frogs#nature
Costa Rica affords lots of opportunities to photograph the iconic red-eyed treefrog (Agalychnis callidryas). This was one of many red-eyes out courting and flirting one night after a brief rain. I lightened the shot a teeny bit, just enough to bring out some curvature on the left eyeball :) #frogfriday#herps#frogs#nature#naturephotography
