Hey boardgamers with your resources represented by various coloured wooden cubes. When thinking about #immigration, remember that #immigrants are one of those resources. Sure, every 20th light brown wooden cube or so may come with a point penalty. But the net effect of receiving those cubes is super strong. It's how you win the game after the Demographic Transition.

"Despite numerous legal obstacles to finding jobs in the United States, immigrants are more likely to work than U.S.-born workers overall and at every education level—a difference that grows significantly among the least skilled. Immigrant adults without high school degrees are about 20 percentage points more likely to work than comparable U.S.-born adults. Furthermore, nearly 97% of immigrants who looked for jobs in 2022 found them."

"Research shows that immigration is linked to decreases, not increases, in violent crime. Neighborhoods with higher concentrations of immigrant populations also have lower crime rates, multiple studies found. Between 1990 and 2014, undocumented immigration, in particular, was 'generally associated with decreasing violent crime,' according to one study."

I know our story isn’t necessarily a common one for in the & a lot of gay people struggle more to be accepted by their families there.

"The former president's vow to deport 15 million people is the cruelest, most illiberal, most openly authoritarian campaign promise in modern U.S. history. Oh, and it would also destroy the economy. ...

The pre-World War II Jewish population of Europe — including the Soviet Union — was about 9 million."

"So just in terms of transporting people, we’re looking at an operation that would need to be two thirds larger than the Nazi transport of Jews during the Holocaust — if they’d managed to get to every Jewish person on the continent.

The Trump immigration plan would be the second largest forced displacement of human beings in human history, on par with Britain’s disastrous partition of India, and second only to total forced displacement during World War II."

Lawyers & migrant rights campaigners have warned that the government is heading for a repeat of the Windrush scandal after imposing a “cliff edge” deadline by the end of 2024 for immigrants to switch from physical biometric residence permits (BRPs) to digital e-visas.
Our incompetent Home Office is in charge of this change, so it will go swimmingly of course.

"MAGA Republicans are already blaming a potential loss in 2024 on illegal voters. On Wednesday, Speaker Johnson and other Trump Republicans held a press conference to promote their new bill to make it illegal for people who are not U.S. citizens to vote in federal elections.

This is a political stunt: It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and there is no evidence that this is happening."

"None of this is true, of course, but it is what the right believes and it is a major motivator behind their efforts to get out the vote.

It’s morally bankrupt and politically tone-deaf to reinforce this broken framing of events. …

If the right is going to make the same attacks no matter what you say and do, while still activating their voters and polluting the minds of the wider voting public, Democrats should give the country something different."

@wdlindsy THIS THIS THIS.

The modern right is purely reactionary: every position a Democrat or someone on the left takes results in them taking the opposing stance (cutting freaking cancer funding, cozying up to Russia, hello?).

But polls consistently show that progressive policies are very popular!

You’re not going to win these voters yourself or by befriending Republicans; your own voters have to talk to their friends about how their lives were helped to make any headway there.
