#ebook#ebookreader#epub#kobo
Choice between buying System Collapse by @marthawells and Translation State from @AnnLeckie
And the winner is Martha Wells!
She gets my money because her books don't have #DRM!
I'm on #Linux and I don't connect my #Kobo to the internet. With DRM I have to spin up a #Windows VM to install some kind of DRM decrypting software, that may or may not work first time. Major headache.
To read a book.
That I paid for.
Now, it's a rainy day and I've got coffee and an armchair and Murderbot. Bliss!
A few months back my #Kobo pitched a fit and reset itself, losing my reading data for the year to that point. Not a huge issue, as for some reason I remembered that it was up to 65.2 hours.
Ever since then, I’ve had to add 65.2 to the current listed time in order to calculate my current reading time.
Anyway, I’m currently figuring out whether I can adjust the time displayed on the Kobo by editing the KoboReader.sqlite file.
So far my experiments have been unsuccessful, but I shall persevere.
After 2 weeks of testing, #reading, and making my own #handcrafted#3dprinted case. Today I'm reviewing the #kobo Clara BW and Clara Color #ereaders, and seeing if it's better than my existing Nia, and #kindle.
I forgot to mention I got my kobo ebook reader today!!
See if you can spot any interesting books! Also, please feel free to recommend me some! I have read in ages so I’m trying to find my groove when it comes to reading books!
I have both a Kindle e-reader and a Kobo e-reader. I prefer the look and feel of the Kobo but I get significantly better cheap book offers from Amazon so the Kindle gets used an awful lot more. I do sometimes worry about authors cuts on these discounts but I generally go on to buy full price books from those authors which makes me feel less guilty.
I keep seeing reviews for newer Kobo e-readers where they knock them saying they still run a "walled garden" no better than Kindle. But that's simply false.
While most books you buy from Kobo include DRM, if the publisher says they want to sell without DRM, Kobo actually does. Many of my DRM-free books came from Kobo (which is easier when you mostly read sci-fi). Contrast against all the Kindle listings where the book description says it's being sold without DRM at the publisher's request, but Amazon sticks DRM on it anyways, against the publisher's wishes.
Kobo's DRM is stock interoperable Adobe DRM. I have loaded DRM'ed books onto my Kobo that I bought from Google Play Books, ebooks.com, and (borrowed from) my university's library system, as well as other sources.
By all means prefer DRM-free books, and support publishers willing to sell without DRM. But saying the situation with Kobo is the same as with Kindle is just.... not accurate. #kobo
a truly outstanding crime thriller, highly recommended. The only reason it didn't get 5/5 is that the author committed a truly HEINOUS crime in the writing of the book - calling Crowded House an AUSSIE band! 😡🤬🤣 #AmReading#ebooks#Kobo@bookstodon#Aotearoa#Australia#Mystery#thriller
2/5 @thestorygraph for A Finer End, book 7 in the Kincaid & James series by Deborah Crombie. My 61st book of 2024, it dragged my average down to under 4.1/5 , thanks to my zero tolerance for mysticism & mumbo-jumbo in mysteries. I skmmed through it 90 minutes, only reading to keep up with developments in Gemma & Duncan's lives. I hope the series leaves the woo-woo behind now. #AmReading#ebooks#Kobo#Mystery@bookstodon#TheStoryGraph
