So, I've been using #Obsidian and one of the things I really like are #css snippets to tweeks things. I wonder if it's possible to add something like this to the user space side of mastodon so users could customize their interface (without adding massive vulnerabilities 😅).
Would be even cooler to combine with the API and apps so a supporting service like moderation tools or addition context could hook into those css tags and display information like some of the add-ons that #bonfire is doing 🤔
This is probably too hacky but can't help trying it out. Phanpy's shortcuts settings are saved as (private) notes on my own profile, which will allow export/import in the "cloud".
It's possible to use the API to add notes for other profiles, and they're hidden from (self, currently-logged-in) own profile. I'm using it to store data 🤪
NOT available on the dev site yet, still on my local machine.
The queer.af seizure by the Taliban should once and for all hammer home the importance of implementing automatic scheduled downloads of your list of followers and followings, and any way at all to download your archive of toots to migrate too, not just your social graph!
Does anybody know of any #mastodon project to build custom feeds? In other words, anything that would allow you to sort and filter your feed in some other way than chronological.
Bluesky’s custom feeds are one of the few things Bluesky does better, and Skyfeed (a 3rd-party app) lets you build your own. Would be awesome if we had something similar over here. #mastodev
"oh nice, #mastoDev has a professional design team, this will allow them to keep closer interaction with the community since programmers can focus on code while the professional design team participates in community discussions and respond to accessibility criticism with valuable feedback from users."
So is there something about recent Mastodon versions that sends push notifications twice (maybe once with a less detailed payload?)? I’m seeing this in multiple clients… #MastoDev
#mastotips I've heard from a few folks that getting started in the fediverse is hard. They sign up and... nothing shows up. That's exactly right! There is no algorithm to get you started. Instead:
Follow as many people as you can
Look at who they follow and pick up a few more
Follow a few hashtags to bring in new stuff.
It'll take a few weeks but hang in there.
As a #UX person, it pains me to put this burden on YOU, we could do better here!
I'm specifically thinking of a 'friends of friends' feature that would let you scroll (or search) through all of the friends of everyone you follow. It would be a very effective way to find people 'in your circle' quickly.
Are there any clients that support this? #mastodev
The new text for "Unlisted" in the Mastodon.social compose box is so bad that I'd ask if it would have been better to just remove the feature.
I saw some Github discussion about this redesign, most of which lead to a very large number of people objecting to the PR's original text of "Low-key public". Although I guess this feedback was listened to, it doesn't seem to have really helped.
Some changes in the new compose are, I think, on balance for the better, but this one is really distracting
Anyone up for a little light #CodeReview? Glitch has an option to show boosts in the local TL, which I think is lovely for small instances like ours, it really helps new ppl get oriented in the fedi. The problem is public feeds dont filter duplicate boosts in the same way that home feeds do, so you end up seeing the same boost lots of time.
I wrote a patch to only show the most recent boost in public TLs, but since I am a relative noob with postgres, SQL, and rails, and since it touches core feed functionality id love it if someone took a look before we deploy on our instance (after some field testing we'll pull upstream). I tried to make it as contained as I could so other masto forks could merge it in too, if ya interested.
As a Mastodon user of the official Mastodon mobile application who wants to read the contents of the ALT text description of an image...
how do you do that? No amount of tapping or long press has done the trick for me, it must be something really trivial that I'm missing, or it's completely counterintuitive.
Is this the intended behaviour, that the ALT text is unreadable on mobile unless you use a screen reader?
Alright here's a draft of adding post titles and slugified URLs to masto. Needs tests and a little tidying, but this is a first small step towards a couple things that i think will be cool to do halfway between microblogging and forums :) https://github.com/NeuromatchAcademy/mastodon/pull/35
If anyone who knows rails and redux better than me wants to laugh at my code (but secretly i will be learning) then feel free to take a whap at it
(edit: yes i know other fedi things and in fact many normal websites already do this) #MastoDev
I'm playing around with mastodon 4.2 advanced search, digging into the code a bit. Really trying to do some trickery here but the devs have it pretty well locked down to exactly what is documented. I thought I could inject some elasticsearch precedence or other patterns but those are purely ignored (or cause issues with the search)
Honestly not sure if I'm even using the right syntax but looks close.
While I'm currently working on many (and I mean many) New And Improved™ moderation tools in #Smithereen, I also added a tiny user-facing thing because clicking CWs one by one was tedious to say the least.
When I have a popular post with lots of replies, I reply back, which is fun! But it just dawned on me that by default, all of my replies are public which just spams peoples feed. That seems rude.
Is there a Mastdon client that lets me set my replies to default to Unlisted? I can certainly switch it EVERY SINGLE TIME I REPLY but that seems silly. An "Always reply Unlisted" option would be great. (@elk and @phanpy don't appear to offer this) #UX#Mastodev
Is there anyone working on generalizing the Mastodon API, or documentation to follow for apps that are using it for things other then Mastodon? #fedidev#mastodev#mastodonapi#APIdev
It'd be really neat if you could create a filter for a specific profile.
For example, if someone didn't want to see any of the posts I make about a specific topic (with a specific term), but wanted to see posts containing that term from everyone else, it'd be nice for them to be able to do that. It presumably wouldn't be that much harder to implement than what's already there in filters that apply to whole timelines. 🤔
