A very special Fediforum session today:

Funding fediverse development

run by a representative of NLNet in the Netherlands, which is an organization that has been funding lots of Fediverse projects with grants. He graciously answered tons of questions about how to obtain funding from them.

There are detailed session notes, which we will publish as soon as possible on https://fediforum.org/

Funding the Fediverse is a perpetual challenge.

One of the few organizations that has consistently granted money to Fediverse projects is NLNet in the Netherlands.

We just received confirmation that one of the principals from is coming to next week, will talk a bit about how to get from NLNet and answer your questions.

It's notorious difficult to get questions answered from people who fund things. So this is a rare opportunity.

Flarum has been funded by NlNet for a 2.0 release that includes federation. Rough ETA at this point is "next year":

https://discuss.flarum.org/d/32812-the-future-of-flarum-in-2023-balancing-open-source-and-success/45

I'm guessing the progress in ActivityPub support in Discourse and GitLab, and the emergence of threadiverse, will all be adding both motivation and complexity to the job of adding federation support to Flarum.

Security by isolation sounds simple enough, but in actuality requires a lot of work and maintenance. Operating systems that can compartmentalize programs and processes are very hardware-specific and the virtual machines they run require regular and complicated upkeep. The Spectrum operating system takes a different and simpler approach: all data on the system is stored in one place and applications that need access to that data are isolated and specifically told what information they can and cannot access, even within the same application. For example, when you want your word processor to access certain files when you are working and other documents when you are at home, you can create two versions or simulations (called instances in Spectrum) with specific access rights. Users can keep a clear overview of their system and applications, as well as the various instances they create, by simply writing all this down in a configuration text. A system called Nix takes this text and creates all the software that the user has written down. Each program can be updated separately, without worries that other parts will break or become incompatible.

I'm a bit tired to read that Google, FB, or whatever killed :

  • XMPP is not dead, far from it

  • I have a lot to say on Google, but at least they made a major contribution to XMPP and the A/V world in general by co-authoring Jingle

  • what was/is painful to XMPP is the lack of resources, specially for client devs, most of clients are made by very small team (often single person), and most of time on their free time

  • other painful things are ill informed criticisms and mis-informations

Recommendations, please, for making an #XMPP audio/video call work between:

  • a user on iOS and a user on Android

  • a user on iOS and a user on Linux

Messaging works fine, as does a/v between Linux and Android, but I have yet to find a combination which works for audio / video with an iOS device in the mix.

(Server is ejabberd.)

Goffi,
@Goffi@mastodon.social avatar

@neil if you self host (or not), #Snikket works quite well, which is based on #Siskin IM on #iOS and #Conversations on #Android. On GNU/Linux, #Dino is working, otherwise #Movim and #Converse should work (web clients). I believe they all work between themselves (for one2one calls).

Be sure to have an XMPP server with STUN/TURN activated (it's precious to cross NAT/Firewalls).

For the record, I'm implementing A/V calls in #Libervia too, thanks to an #NLnet grant.

I just published a new blog post on the website, discussing the grant we are getting from and what we are going to do with the money: https://www.mailpile.is/blog/2023-05-01_A_Mail_Client_in_Six_Steps.html

The tl;dr is that we are bringing from "a thing Bjarni hacks on as often as he can", to "a new terminal mode e-mail client which people should be able to use."

I'm pretty excited about this!
