During a break in the rain yesterday the kids rushed out to grab a bite. I love how the ground squirrels are protective of their bunny rabbit friend 🤭 what good kids! #SquirrelAppreciationDay
Sorry for the photo quality, he was way up there with the sun behind him but he was so cute. I felt eyes on me and spotted this shy new squirrel watching me, trying to decide if it was brave enough to come get a nut 🥹 #SquirrelAppreciationDay
Today, Jan.21st, is #SquirrelAppreciationDay. It was created in 2001 by a North Carolina wildlife rescuer named Christy Hargrove, to help people recognize the value of #Squirrels in their local #ecosystems.
It seems appropriate that yesterday, my family & I were driving home from Kentucky, and came through #Olney#Illinois. As we had done on previous such trips to visit family, we drove around the town, hoping to spot one of their famous #WhiteSquirrels, but were (once again) unsuccessful.🐿🌰☹️
More than once, I thought I spotted one. But my theory is that it's hard to distinguish any of them in the snow. So we could only pose next to the town's squirrel statue.
#OlneyIllinois holds regular counts of their #AlbinoSquirrel population, and has strict laws about loose cats and dogs, to protect their unique squirrel colony.
Happy #SquirrelAppreciationDay! Despite the opinion of some people in my home there's a colony of white squirrels in Toronto's Trinity-Bellwood Park! I know. I've seen them. It's sort of become a running joke to question the reality of the white squirrels of Trinity-Bellwoods, but they are well documented. You can google it. They even have a street, White Squirrel Way, and a café named after them.

I appreciate squirrels because they make that cute noise when they eat seeds and because they stole all the light bulbs from my neighbour’s backyard. 😁 💡
