it took me a while to figure out, but seems to have changed the default view with the latest version 115. All of a sudden I didn't get proper threading anymore.
Turns out there is an option to choose between Table view and the more webmail-like Card view, and Card view is selected as the standard.

That was of course after I already went to the about:config and tried to methodically go through all the threading options to no success.

So, if starts to scramble the odd email that it retrieves from gmail - will that affect the emails in in my gmail account if it's synched?
One in a while, the odd email in my TB inbox either appears blank or has a bunch of code/text (whatever) appearing instead of just the email. In one that I know of, the subject heading is from one email and the content is from another (but with pages and pages of jibberish.
If I do a Repair on the Thunderbird inbox, should I disconnect it from gmail?

TIL: Something which I suspected for ages (and is really annoying) but have finally found the answer to, is that @thunderbird global searches are faceted and try to find close matches:

"Most of the time this is a very useful feature, but there is no way to disable it if you want an exact match"

@killyourfm Thanks for chatting with me on Saturday at the @thunderbird booth.

I've been playing around with the folders that are created in Thunderbird from tags in Gmail.

If you have an email with two tags in Gmail, it appears in two folders in Thunderbird.

But if you delete the email from one of the folders, it disappears from the other.

If you want to "remove" from one folder but not the other, the solution I see is to "move" it. (You don't get multiple copies.)

Does anyone know if there's a way in Thunderbird to either:

  1. Compose replies in the same format (HTML or plain text) as the original message.

  2. Compose replies in HTML or plain text depending on the recipient.

Problem: I have clients who want plain text emails and others who want HTML.

(I know you can send HTML + plain text, but that causes problems for some clients depending on their email software - I can't do anything about this).

Richard,

Sorry to bother your, @thunderbird, but I think it might have been you that explained how to put accounts into your Feed Reader? Am I wrong? Do you know how to do that?

bogo, (edited )
@bogo@hapyyr.com avatar

@Richard @thunderbird

I am no , but in short:
--add .rss to any mastodon account, for example "http://hapyyr.com/@bogo.rss"

  • Then just add it as a feed into your thunderbird.

I actually created a new feed account type called "Mastodon" to read some of the feeds there,

Hope that helps!

IMPORTANT: might leak your subjects to the wrong recipient.

I follow every rule on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

Nevertheless, Thunderbird got confused (I assume it could be threaded-view mode) and displayed subject of other mails.

When pressing the reply-button, it also SENT THE WRONG SUBJECT to the other recipient. This is a big problem.

A workaround is using the "repair" button, but I can now confirm that it really sent out the wrong subject according to the message source!

Question to all engineers (of all genders, of course):

offers a wide range of corporate tools, that (in parts) interact with each other, making it very comfortable for companies (of any size) to use them and thus getting "vendor locked-in".

E.g.:
Outlook connects to teams,
Edge (plans) to recommend (and connect) to teams and vice versa; logging in with MS SSO, over VPN, and so on, very strongly interconnect their different tools.

Would all that be possible - already today - using only tools?
With the same level of comfort and "interconnectedness" in comparably "high polished" user interfaces?

I ask, as someone some time ago stated that Microsoft would be "exceptionally good" in doing so for corporates.

kikobar,
@kikobar@acc4e.com avatar

@fasnix I don't think it would be possible with the 'same level of DIScomfort'... but yes with a MUCH BETTER lever of comfort. 😉

I explain. IMHO is a pain even with interoperability in between different versions of their own suite. By using applications such as , , , , etc., you'll be able to interoperate with others using a far more diverse landscape of systems and applications, including Linux, Apple and old versions of Microsoft applications that they don't support themselves any more, but you'll come across all the time.

I moved away from Microsoft and used exclusively OpenSource software for almost 20 years with zero regrets.

I do this both at personal and corporate level.

The only 'downside' is that you will learn new things... 😎

To be fair, there are some niche areas where proprietary software might be the only cross-platform suitable solutions, and then you need to add those to your suite, but that has not been my experience with any of the Microsoft products at all.

Just as an indicator, on , Microsoft's own cloud computing service, 60% of the cores are running .

Now, if you are one of those people who are scared of computers, or think that software is some kind of black magic or voodoo... ok, don't try... but in any other scenario with a bit of natural curiosity, you'll be fine. 😊

#Linux is like a Chinese copy of an #OS with poorly written documentation and badly fitting parts. I'm trying to load #Mozilla #Thunderbird on #Linux_Mint but the instructions are gibberish. e.g. instructions say following libraries or packages are needed:
glibc 2.17 or higher
GTK+ 3.14 or higher
libdbus-glib 0.6.0 or higher
libglib 2.42 or higher
libstdc++ 4.8.1 or higher
libxtst 1.2.3 or higher
X.Org 1.0 or higher

Why isn't there a way to check if my Mint install already has them?

Yoshi,

@thunderbird @normplum Thanks. I'm an engineer by training and English was not my first language so I tend to think in analogies. It would be helpful to have an overview of how & are similar/different from /. Also, I'm very cautious about what I d/l and install on my desktop. It would be useful to know what sources can be trusted. Let me think more about this.

lately #thunderbird is freezing at start.. very slow response, almost unusable UI. takes a while to get to normal behavior, and sometimes freezes completely (=have to kill process).
using just 14 imap accounts (in 4 different servers) with a few dozen filters, and ~10 RSS feed subscriptions.
also connected to cardav/caldav with a single nextcloud instance.
could be network related, but have noticed same behavior both with slow/fast network connections.

@thunderbird
any ideas? tweaks perhaps?

today was a first for oom-killer killing

pc was powered off for the last 3 days. so 3 days since last open and thunderbird can't handle either one of :

  1. hundreds of new emails?
  2. 1GB of global-messages sqlite?
  3. 20-30 simultaneous network connections?
  4. 50-60 filters on hundreds of new emails?
  5. syncing >1day old emails/caldav/carddav/rss ?
  6. other?

last time, thunderbird sqlite vacuum helped a bit. but maybe its time to actively seek/test alternatives...
