Should've posted about this piece on the second generation of video game consoles by @siliconundergro before the one on the third generation I linked the other day. This one's super cool too. Colecovision, Intellivision, Vectrex, Atari consoles, etc https://dfarq.homeip.net/second-generation-video-game-consoles
I have way too many games to ever play, but still I can't help it. Today's haul: Othello (NES), Spinball (Vectrex), Colossal Cave Adventure (PS5), Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars (GBA). Read on for more details
✏️📺 In our museum collection, we have a unique gaming console called the Vectrex, which comes with its own built-in TV screen. Its distinctive feature, as evident from its name, is vector graphics (made up of lines) instead of raster graphics (like pixels on the screen) - giving its games a unique look and very smooth animations.
Preparing for the Supercon presentation of my portable Vectrex... I feel like on a high level I have interesting stuff to tell, but I'm at the point of presentation building where I go 'this is a mess, no one is gonna like this' to the point of me wanting to throw my laptop out of the window and live my days out with the Amish. I know it'll pass and I'll make it work somehow, but oof, it's no fun. At least I have a 3d print running for a 2nd prototype case, that makes it feel like even if I'm not doing anything productive, something productive still is happening.
Côté Gamers, a development team in Europe, has brought the Sony Playstation classic WipeOut to the Vectrex. Well, sort of. Unsurprisingly, the game (titled WireOut RE 2X) is more of a demake than anything, with the hovercrafts and the track drawn in wireframes....
The Vectrex was an impressive system for its time, but despite its ambitions of bringing the arcade experience home, its manufacturer GCE (later Milton Bradley) didn't have the broad access to arcade hits that the competing Atari 5200 and especially the ColecoVision did. If you wanted a Vectrex version of Pac-Man, you had to...
I affected more repairs to my Vectrex and it's more or less working perfectly now, but I still have some stuff I need to do.
Check out the inside of this dusty boi!
I had one and I loved it! It was vector based so faux #3D in some games and was NOTHING like anything else around ..and it MAY be in my parents attic, but i'm pretty sure they made me sell it at a #yardsale... Like they did everything else that I didn't play with for 6 months... 😆
if anyone (in the UK), is looking for a #Vectrex Console, just saw one for sale on gumtree East Lothian, for £200. which is a good price. hell its a really good price. tempted but its not really my thing. found it in my daily window shop for old #retrocomputing stuff
it looks to have some sort of space invaders vinyl wrapper on it as well. which is different.
The controller which comes with the Vectrex has an analog(ue) joystick and four buttons. The controller is attached to the machine via a telephone cord style curly lead.
When you were not playing, the controller sat discretely on the front of the machine.
Vectral brings wireframe WipeOut and two other games to the world's only vector-scan game console (cotegamers.com)
