This is story is wild: a police department raided the Marion County Record in retaliation because one of the reporters viewed information on an influential person; there was no affidavit filed to obtain the search warrant, and several elderly people were put under undue stress and endangered, and in fact one, Joan Meyer, has died.
The cops are now "withdrawing the warrant"--after disrupting the paper's operation, costing them money, and with the stress causing the death of one of the co-owners, now they go, "oopsies, here's your shit, no harm done"?
The paper is bringing a federal suit and GOOD FOR THEM.
Dans le Lot, ce samedi 5 août, deux gendarmes ont débarqué sur le marché de la petite commune de Lalbenque à la recherche [de Jean-Yves], un épouvantail fabriqué par un enfant de 10 ans.
I find plenty about this infuriatingly enraging (which my boosts highlight) but down the list – after multiple assaults on the first amendment – is the dumbfounding fact that the restaurant owner complained about the newspaper, even though they decided not to run the (factual) story about the idiot’s past drunkenness.
It was already public record. Because it happened.
Heard of the Streisand effect?
Say hello to Newell info.
Meyer (journalistically, responsibly) decided not to run with this because they couldn't substantiate the story with an on-record source...
But this police chief, Gideon Cody, went and made us all aware of his jackassery by trying to cover it up in one of the most heinous assaults on the freedom of the press we've seen in America... well, at least my lifetime, that's for sure.
@aral@knwmoon exactly & there was an ultra comical example of that when the New York City Police Department 3 month long strike was ended, not by their union demands being caved to, but by the report that they got an advanced copy of, showing that the crime rate, of all types including violent most of all, went down during their absence. 🤪 #ACAB
As UK police forces ramp up use of facial recognition, let's remind ourselves of the harms it can cause because of errors from the technology.
Those errors form racist false arrests, which can be traumatic for those involved. This is illustrated by the case from the US of a pregnant woman arrested following a false positive from facial recognition software.
The cop that held back the people wanting to prevent murder and/or give medical aid to the victim as George Floyd was being murdered has been sentenced for aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter to 57 months prison.
The cop, Tou Thao, still "denied any responsibility for Floyd's death. In rambling remarks full of biblical references, he drew parallels with the sufferings and false accusations endured by Job and Jesus". https://apnews.com/article/george-floyd-minneapolis-officer-tou-thou-sentencing-586deaeb4d14807ef3f2bdd0196d0b86
When Governments make it illegal to feed hungry people and the Cops actually uphold that law without reservation, it's time to admit you live in an authoritarian police state run by oligarchs who want to control every resource and every minute of your time for their benefit.
"Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint"
