The South Side of Chicago is … quite lovely, actually, and where this Northern Cardinal is enjoying a sunny day.

This dapper bird’s ancestors were bought and sold in the pet trade under the birdcage name “Nutmeg Mannikin”, but escaped their captors and now fly free and proud as the Scaly-Breasted Munia.

Nashville Warbler moments before its release from the banding station at Bear Divide Vista Picnic Area - where thousands of birds a day from 130+ species fly over during spring migration. A small fraction are trapped, weighed, blood-sampled and banded, for research purposes.

A Summer Tanager. Bird names are often misleading. 1: It won’t be summer for months. 2: This bird is in the Cardinal family, not the Tanager family. Name aside, this “Summer” “Tanager” is authentically gorgeous.

Two Brown Pelicans

“A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican,
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I'm damned if I see how the helican!”
(Dixon Lanier Merritt)

This Neil Armstrong of birds (or perhaps, Avian Amelia Earhart?) crossed the Rocky Mountains solo, the first Field Sparrow to be spotted in California many years, a humble-looking but intrepid half-ounce explorer far from its usual habitat. A single 2-minute sighting in Griffith Park drew birders from near and far trying to see it again, so far to no avail.
