A normal spring day at the feeder (see ALT for IDs). in addition, Merlin identified a great crested flycatcher, a red eyed vireo, an American redstart and a Northern mockingbird close to the house, but no luck seeing them.

A female cowbird perches on the rough bark of a tree, blending in very well.
A female cardinal plots her next flight down to the feeder.

It rained all day and was cold. All the usual suspects were at the feeders including the red headed woodpecker, who is now a regular.

Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on April 5, 2024

Some of the camera settings that I used to make this photo are at: https://www.rsok.com/~jrm/2024Apr14_birds_and_cats/2024apr05_woodpecker_IMG_9485c.html

Today I have seen a pair of downy woodpeckers, and the female working on her nest hole one tree over from a red-naped sapsucker DIY gent!

Well, maybe not a gent despite his landlordly behavior toward nuthatches. Would a gentleman have to do with his mate where I could see?! 😱 :sapsucker: :sapsucker:

Ancrum Arts - 4 years on

We acquired this steel woodpecker 4 years ago (or maybe 5) at Ancrum. It occupies a half trunk alongside the Borders Abbey Way which runs through our ‘garden’ (wild wild woods). It has weathered very nicely on both sides and is frequently commented on - which is probably because while we have two pairs of woodies in the woods, they are easy to hear and difficult to see.

It drizzle, and this is unfair to Red-headed Woodpeckers...

A sitting atop the feeder pole makes himself look bigger, expanding his wings and swaying back and forth to scare the much larger red-bellied off the suet feeder.

The nuthatch did this several times, but I only caught the last couple of seconds. It's right at the beginning of the video.

A nuthatch sits on top of a black iron bird feeder pole. There are feeder cages on both arms of the pole. In the center is a suet feeder being enjoyed by a red-bellied woodpecker. The nuthatch spreads his wings, leans forward, and sways back and forth to scare the larger woodpecker off the suet. The nuthatch then climbs down to the suet.

This female Downy Woodpecker looks a bit tense, but it's because she's waiting on this branch for her turn at the suet feeder, and I think she's concerned about bigger liner-breakers coming along like the irritable Mockingbird that semi-regularly knocks her off...

I hacked my mechanical keyboard and added a Trackpad. It works nicely!

Cirque Trackpad works nicely with Splinky, an open-sourced MCU with RP2040 in heart, which I built myself. The board is also open-sourced called Woodpecker. Modified by @ozkan due to my request.

The case is a generic 60% walnut one.

Both hardware, including shields and Firmware ( QMK and @zmk ) source could be found at: https://github.com/Ardakilic/woodpecker-keyboard/

I got Codeberg’s CI to build and publish my website when I update the repo. I’m not sure if I’m bad at setting these things up or if it’s finicky and poorly documented…

Woodpecker needs a better way of setting up and handling ssh keys and config.

Good morning everyone, happy Saturday! I'm enjoying the weekend so far and hope you are too. I was in the backyard and got a great picture of a pecker to share, a red bellied woodpecker that is. He was teasing me all morning, so I got my camera out.

Have a wonderful day! We're going to do our errands and maybe the MO Botanical Garden.

A red bellied woodpecker cleaning itself while hanging on a tree trunk. He is white with black highlights and a red head.
