ActivityPub was not invented in 2018, in fact it has a history of multiple protocol iterations since 2008 including OpenMicroBlogging and OStatus.
2010 another company named diaspora raised $200k to create another federated protocol. In 2018 #diaspora peaked at 1 Mio. users with 200 federated servers. Then the core dev decided to ignore #ActivityPub. That was the end.
Lets see how #Bluesky and #Nostr inventing the wheel again.
Wisst ihr, was wirklich genial wäre.
😉 #friendica#firefish#diaspora#peroma#pixelfed#peertube#mastodon
Anyway the reason I came across that fake legal firm profile is because my wandering around the Fediverse has led me to Diaspora, which looks very interesting as a federated Facebook type thing but with far stronger privacy controls.
It's Fediverse but not ActivityPub, so no direct interoperability with Mastodon/Firefish etc, but I'm considering setting up a presence there - about 5 or 6 years after I left FB.
#MusicFromTheMotherland#BlackMastodon#BlackTwitter#diaspora@blackmastodon I've recovered enough of my spirit to post some music today. The artist is Sona Jobarteh, the first female kora virtuoso. Her dad is Malian who moved to the Gambia. She's also cousin to my very favorite kora player, Toumani Diabate. This cut is her song about the Gambia. The video features scenes from all over the Gambia, children playing, adults working, singing and playing instruments. Enjoy. https://youtu.be/PtmmlOQnTXM?si=ULtfPWb_TcGCFz9v
(Currently more and more into wondering to give up on #pixelfed for keeping images on Friendica. Would feel a bit sad to miss the portfolio and the individual history. But would mean to "win" interoperability with #Diaspora and apparently a more stable means way of communication and commenting, which still feels flaky and unreliable between pixelfed(.social?) and virtually everyone else...)
Its funny and weird seeing people that are on both #diaspora and #mastodon. Just skip the middle man and get a #Friendica account. You only need one account then and can see everyone from both sites.
:brain0: Jumping from one corporation-backed, short-lived, and centralized social media platform to another.
:brain14: Hanging out on one decentralized social network for over a decade, possibly not on the same instance the entire time.
Hope everyone in NY stays safe. Here's a little music for your Friday. This song is Allah B2y from The Nile Project musicians. I mentioned the project before. It works with musicians from all the countries impacted by the Nile river and water shortage. They tour together to educate people on the issue of water shortage. See second post for more on the project 1/2 https://youtu.be/Slf_oo4s33c?si=KRbRjr2q-V4Vvb1A
updates from the diaspora. the city i used to live in, had a silent vigil for the hostages and for pogromnacht (organized by Jews), and people showed up out of nowhere screaming free p and also threw stones, mind u the vigil was only 15 people - so intimidating and threatening to arab nationalism. then in other related news, marxist squatters (who squatted an old synagogue) are organizing an event about how it is very rightful and good that hamas rose up against the big bully... yall... i don't know where to live anymore. #hamas#synagogue#diaspora#DiasporicNonsense#StonesForPalestine
Just a quick post today. In light of the news yesterday that Mdou Moctar aand. his band are stuck in the US because of the coup in Niger, I'm posting another song from them. I remember when the Malian artists got stuck all over the world and it makes my heart sick. Two links below: to video TALA TANNAM and second to his GoFundMe page. Help if you can. https://youtu.be/u51HJcN1Dp8 https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-mdou-moctar-while-they-cannot-return-home

Interesting to see the Southeast Asian connection: as transit (Vietnam & Thailand), and of course like us, mainly from the south of China
