WTF created an eBay account just so I can buy a laptop battery and immediately got suspended. Like permanently suspended! I didn’t even do anything!!! #eBay#WTFmoment
#Elon is really ramping it up again. #TwitterX just released audio and video calling, which is pretty kewl - had to actually login and test it myself; but what's really kewl is all the PayPal-like functionality coming to an #X near you, lolz.
It's about time he got busy finishing what he started off doing with #PayPal a couple of decades back before #eBay bought it.
Another day, another ebay listing. My pet peeve now isn't flaky sellers - it's the ones who enable Best Offer, but either ignore offers, or send you rude replies when you submit one.
If (as a seller) you think it's low, reply with a counter-offer... chances are the buyer's aiming for somewhere between the asking price and what they're offering anyway.
And above all, if you're not interested in offers, don't advertise that you are. It just wastes everyone's time. #ebay#rant
So, I'm looking for a laptop bag on wheels that can hold at most a 17 inch laptop, cables, hard drives, power bricks, charging things, toiletries when needed. I don't want this to be a suitcase, but it needs to be a carry on for when I fly, and the wheels need to do that cool turny thing so I can have it behind me or at my side. I would also want it big enough to when necesary fit travel cubbes with my clothes. Does such a thing exist? I would want my stuff to be well protected. #Traveling
Had a person send me their number as an interested buyer and told me to text them. I did (first mistake), and we arranged a meetup time. Then they asked if, for their safety, they could send me a six digit code (some of you already know where this is going) that I could repeat back to them to verify myself.
I said, "absolutely!" And sure enough, I got a Google Voice verification number. lol
If you're not familiar with the scam, shady people will take your phone number and try to create a Google Voice account with it. If you provide them with the 6-digit code that Google sends you, they can "verify" that they are you, and then basically use your phone number to run scams, commit fraud, etc. It's nasty business.
I called them out, blocked them, then reported them to the marketplace website and to the FTC--though, almost certainly, they were using the phone number of another poor soul to carry this out.
I used to work as a social engineer, running phishing campaigns (ethically, with consent lol), against Fortune 1000 companies to assess their level of vulnerability. Luckily for me, I was super familiar with this, but most of the people I told about it have said, "Oh, I probably would have fallen for that...", and even I set myself up for it.
So that is why I'm posting this. Please be aware of sketchy shit like this. If someone is asking you for a verification code over SMS or email, tread with EXTREME caution. Also, it's usually pretty shady if a stranger you're already chatting with wants to move to a new platform. Not always, but if someone emails or messages you on Facebook to ask you to text them, that's a little weird. I'd had legitimate buyers/sellers do that, so it's not unheard of, but it should put you on guard.
If you buy/sell/trade online frequently, it's a good idea to use a dedicated MySudo number, VOIP number, and/or a burner phone for that.

A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a couple of Mastodon friends about ordering high value things from Ebay. I had ordered a camera for an extraordinary price. I found out that the camera was allegedly mailed from China .... i.e., slow boat from China. The camera hasn't arrived, the seller said it was detained by customs. I notified Ebay and requested a refund a few days ago. Ebay said to wait until today and if the seller hadn't resolved the issue that they would step in. This morning, I notified Ebay that the seller had not responded, and Ebay issued a refund.
This number seems kind of impossible seeing it as just a standalone statistic. Then I remember the hours I spend every week filling orders and it seems a lot more plausible...
I noticed #ebay in classic tech bro style has started hiding its fees. They used to display them right up front. I’ve been using eBay since 1999. Anyways, I sold something for the first time in a while. Holy shit the fees! 13.25% is highway robbery.
#eBay knowingly allows fraudulent sellers to use their platform as long as they get their 10%. And once you’ve been scammed good luck getting a human being to help you.
What’s the best way to go about #bidding on #eBay? There’s an item I really want and it’s hard to come by in great condition so don’t want to miss out. Place bid now or closer to when the listing ends, so confusing. 🤔
The USPS says that I’ve been scammed; eBay says for me to take it up with the seller, who hasn’t responded to any of my messages. I joined eBay in 1999 and have successfully sold thousands of dollars of goods, but I think I’ll be done for good if eBay doesn’t give me a refund on this bogus sale. #ebay#ebayscam (2 of 2)
