Implementation of the Indigenous Languages Act is critical to turning the tide on the continued loss of Indigenous languages in Canada, but that means money must be found to support community efforts to revitalize language, said the first ever Indigenous languages commissioner Ron E. Ignace.

And he says it requires an all-of-government approach, not in a silo under Canadian Heritage.

The craft of knitting Cowichan sweaters is handed down through the generations in First Nations families on Vancouver Island, BC.

Having to sell the sweaters at wholesale prices to shops that mark up the retail cost by hundreds of dollars has led to an initiative called Knit With Purpose to deal direct with buyers and give knitters a fair wage for their time and expertise.

NPR publishing anti-union propaganda from Steven Rattner, a multimillionaire who owns homes in Manhattan, Martha's Vineyard, and a horse farm in upstate NY. The same guy who bailed out the auto industry wants you to think the is greedy for wanting a 32 hour work week and cites low wages in MEXICO as a reason that their wage demands are "unrealistic." Fuck this guy.

Hope for workers: New proposed rulemaking from the DOL would raise the threshold for salaried workers to be eligible for overtime to $55,000/yr. Big win for working people. The federal overtime provisions are contained in the FLSA. Unless exempt, employees covered by the Act must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time & one-half their regular rates of pay. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/overtime

Teamsters union, representing UPS workers, seeks a new 5-year agreement for better wages, ending two-tier job classification, more full-time positions, safety measures, and protection against harassment. In Newport News, Teamsters Local 822 staged a practice picket, warning of a potential strike if no deal is reached by July 31. They demand fair compensation for all workers amid rising inflation. If demands for fair wages and improved work conditions aren't met, this will be the largest single-employer walkout in U.S. history. #Teamsters #UPS #UnionStrike #FairWages #NewportNews #HamptonRoads

Do you order meal delivery? Then you should defend bike lanes:

"There's a dehumanizing detachment that comes with the apps: it’s easy to tap a few things on your phone and forget somebody has to make the food and another to bring it to them.

...providing more safe cycling infrastructure will encourage more riders to stay off the sidewalks. Where are the companies adding their hefty voices to the calls for it?"
